looking for a safety leash that is quite safe

If you use a safety leash for your tot, what do you use? How do you like it?

I'm looking for one and have actually seen quite a few on Amazon and other places, and most of them are very cheap, but I'm not sure they are safe. Some have what looks like flimsy straps which could easily tear or break. Some fasten with Velcro, which I'm afraid could become undone at the critical moment. I saw one that the child is supposed to hold one end and you the other; but what if one of you momentarily lets go to use that hand? Some fasten around the neck, which looks like a choking hazard to me, or around the wrist, which concerns me also.

I'm not worried about maintaining my son's self respect or dignity as we are very close (he's been mostly worn in a Beca Butterfly SSC up until now and at night he sleeps tight against me, but he now wants to be more free to creep, climb, cruise, and otherwise explore. I would use it only at home and in situations where he wants to be free but I'm concerned about his safety. We live close to a busy road, we have two sheep, we have a trampoline I like to relax on with the baby but it has no net... Thanks for any help you can give.

I don't think any of them are really designed to be able to pull a child back- more just keep track of them in a crowd.

I got one at target years ago.  It's a plush animal backpack that has buckles that go across the chest and a eash that atttaches as the "tail".  Similar to this.  http://www.shop.com/Jeep_%22Sheep%22_Animal_Backpack_Harness-458098344-505826753-p+.xhtml?sourceid=1414
