Switching from electric to gas stove?

Our home is about 11 years old.  We have natural gas heat, hot water heater, and fireplace.  I can see in our attic that we have lines run to have a gas dryer and a gas stove, but both of those are electric (I suppose whoever bought the house originally didn't want to pay for the "gas" upgrades).

Over the last several months I've made a real effort to learn how to cook, and was lamenting to my dh that I wished we had a gas stove so I could cook on it.  Then he said, "Well, we have a line for it, can't the gas company just hook it up if we buy a gas stove?"  It sounds simple, but I bet it will involve putting in a special exhaust (so I don't blow up the house or something), etc.

So, I will look into more next week, I was just wondering if anyone had every switched their stove from gas to electric and how much is ran you ($$).  Thanks!

My grandma did.  I cannot remember how much it was but it wasn't a crazy amount.  If the piping is there and you are going from an unfinished space into the kitchen (like running it through the attic) it shouldn't be very much.  If you have to cut into the drywall that might be a bigger repair.

I don't think a gas stove requires more venting than an electric - maybe someone else can clarify that.

Call the gas company and get a quote.  Gas is SO much nicer to cook on.  And a gas dryer is cheaper to run.

I'm sorry I can't give you an amount - but we've been looking at houses ourselves and have heard multiple times that adding a gas line for a stove is no big deal and really easy and affordable (personally, I interpret this as under 500, probably more like 100-200 but I have no idea how correct that would be).

Adding an exhaust fan is nice just for cooking but not something special or needed with a gas stove.

I did it about 8 years ago, and am in Canada so...  :)  It cost me approximately $250 for the connection and the exhaust.  My stove is on an outside wall, so the exhaust was very simple to put in.

We literally just did this. The stove was delivered yesterday, and the gas company guys just left about an hour ago. We has an existing gas line that ran to under the kitchen and was capped off (apparently one of the previous owners had a gas stove that was replaced with electric before we bought the house). It took about an hour for two guys to extend the line to our new stove and hook it up. No special exhaust was needed, since the stove's line is on the same system as our existing gas furnace and water heater. It cost $325 for parts and labor.

Thanks so much for the info!  :-)  The gas company will be coming out sometime tomorrow or Thursday to see how much work needs to be done, so they can give me a quote and I can save up $.  Yay!  I'm so excited.  I told my dh that I wanted a gas stove as my graduation gift, but I'm not graduating until next spring.  So I have some time.  I was afraid it was going to be $$$$$, but it sounds like it's going to be more than manageable.  Once I get the quote, and then pick out my stove, I can start squirreling money away.

I can't wait to graduate!  LOL
