baby einstein and other things

Ugh...My cousin posted on FB, that she thanked God for Baby Einstein.  I, of course, mentioned that I hoped it was Baby Einstein toys instead of videos, because the AAP recommends no TV for under 2's.  One of her stupid friends posted that he would send his children to a crack house if it kept them quiet.  My SIL agreed with them.  I guess that's two more people that will never have babysitting rights to my existing step-son and future children.

Why don't people get that TV isn't the best thing in the world for children?  We rarely let my step-son watch when he is with us.  My DH and I watch, but it's not in front of him and I have decided that I won't be watching in front of the baby when we have a baby, which probably mean VERY little TV for a while.

I just don't get why someone would say that...why would someone say that?

Well, I'll preface this by saying that before I had kids I had a lot of ideas of how I would raise them, but alas, I had them and had to roll with the punches. lol I don't have cable or satellite, but we do have a selection of carefully chosen VHS tapes.

DD got the gift set Baby Einstein DVDs and didn't like it. But she did get to watch cartoons, not for hours on end, but more than a few times! DS doesn't watch hours on end either, but Sesame St and a few others he will watch on occassion. Harmful? I doubt it. DD loves reading and is really excelling academically, at gymnastics, etc. I think it's all about balance. With DS, a few minutes in the morning allows me to drink my coffee while hot and even load the dishwasher without him throwing dishes on the floor and stealing knives from the utensil basket. Then we clean up together, play, and spend hours in the back yard. :)

I never really understand posts like this. Does it make you feel like you are a better person? I think the crack house comment was a joke. Regardless of how I feel about tv, I can't imagine telling someone who says they like Baby Einstein videos that their child shouldn't be watching television. One thing I strongly believe since becoming a parent is live and let live.

Possibly, this is something that you just won't get until after you have a baby or three in your house demanding attention 24/7 AND have people judging your parenting choices All!The!Time!.    Because it makes perfect sense to me!

Now, I personally would neither send my kids to a crack house OR let them watch baby einstein...but there are times I wish they had an "off" button.
