Running Around the Maypole ~ the May Dingo Thread - Page 2

Jen, would you toss my recent half on the list: http://www.lincolnrun.org/marathon.htm (May 1st, 2:17:42) and add this one: http://www.papillion.org/recreation_marathon_fun_walk.cfm (May 15th.)

Thanks. love.gif

RR: got in a 4+mile run yesterday, finally.  Decided it is not good idea for injury prone person to run a race in a few days that they haven't trained for in maybe 6 weeks despite what her dh and father are telling her to do.  I'm the runner, and it's my body.  there.  :)  BUT I still get a dingo meet up!!!  WOOT!!!  CHeering on BEC!!  Also did weights for arms, lunges, squats, yoga, push ups, full leg raises.

I'll be looking for some smaller summer races and something in the fall.  Monumental half or full has been on my mind for years.

NRR:  life.  :)

Okay, got to get kids ready for school and I have three meetings today by noon.

Promise to get back for personals!

OT: Method concentrate laundry detergent for he washers.  Any one try it?  It's peaked my interest.

That is right around the corner, and it reminds me that my first ever sprint tri is on that very same date!

So, DrJen, can you please add the May 22nd Charleston Sprint to the calendar for me?

RM & Bec, Dingo meet-up this weekend? Cool! Have fun.

OK, I just spent the last 10 minutes perusing the results list for that tri over the past few years, checking to see whether I would be dead last in this tri or whether I have a chance of beating anyone. bag.gif Is anyone else a little hesitant to have family come cheer them on? I feel like I am being a party pooper, but I'm really worried about them being bored and me being last...

MelW - have you done much work on strengthening your hips and core? Im having trouble with hip mobility affecting other parts of my leg, and it gets sooo much better the stronger my hips and core are. There are tons of excerises to be found online to do for that, and/or I can recommend the ones that really work for me. I'm seeing a chiro next week for the first time in my life...

Gaye - sounds like par for the age, and you are doing an AMAZING job parenting!!!!!! Truly. With all you have going on, I dont see you flagging on that end at all hug.gif

tjsmama ~ given the fact that your DS and my DD2 are almost the exact age, it seems to be totally age related.  DD2 has been really, REALLY stubborn about things recently (non-negotiable things like wearing a seatbelt or her bike helmet...) and has been copping some serious attitude with me as well.  I'm thinking it's an "almost 5" thing.  In fact, I recall this from DD1's behavior at the same age.  You're doing a great job, Mama.

sparkle ~ lovely to see you!  And I'm glad to hear you're getting some exercise in.  I look forward to hearing about your chiro experience.

I'm doing a sprint tri on May 22 too!  But I still need to register, so hold off on putting me on the list until I plunk down the cash.

Penelope ~ you did a great job on your half!  Especially given the need to stop and stretch every few miles.  Way to go!

RR ~ biked DD2 to preschool, biked to the Y, ran for a little over an hour, biked back to preschool, biked DD2 back home.  Total of 11.5 miles biked and 7.25 miles run.  I'm beat.

Good evening!

Thanks for all of the support on DS and his accidents.  tjsmama--we're fighting the same stubborn battles here, too.  Sigh.  This age is problematic.  Last night the kids and I went out with DH after work to buy a suit.  Because God forbid he buy one on his own without me and the kids sitting around, bored and restless in the store for an hour while he tries things on.  Anyway, on the way home when I told the kids how late it was and we wouldn't have more time to read, DS threw his water bottle at me.  His metal water bottle.  At my head.  It's a lucky thing I wear glasses to deflect things from my temple.  I shouted and then I cried, which had much more of an effect on DD than on DS.  He just doesn't have that tiny pause in his brain from an impulse to an action.  How do you develop that in kids?

Anyway, all was fine and cheery this morning.

I went out for a long run today; I did the same 12-mile course that I was so grouchy about a couple of weeks ago.  I brought water and Starburst candies, and I mentally prepared myself for the horrific hills, and it went much better today than last time.  I promised myself that if I got to the point where I absolutely needed to walk, I would pause, drink some water, eat a Starburst, and continue on at a slow jog.  This happened much later in the run than I expected, and I only ended up pausing twice.  I felt strong.

Now my knees are really aching.  I'm NOT getting into another ice bath, though.  No WAY.  I should probably take some pain killers, maybe?  And use an ice pack?  I seem to remember being sore the last time but then being okay by the next day.  I'll hope that's the case now, too.

That's about it; I'm feeling dull this evening.  It must be time for bed.

love.gif and happytears.gif I love you guys so much. Thank you for letting me know that it's not just me. I've been SO SO SO frustrated lately. And I hate that I spend so little time with DS and the majority of what time we do spend together is arguing. We had another major meltdown event today at lunch, but as soon as that managed to get shut down and we got out of the house, we had a really, really good afternoon together.

Which involved spending a ridiculous amount of money. My bank account is crying right now. Sigh. rolleyes.gif We crammed a whole lot of errands into about three and a half hours, but the biggest stops involved renewing our ski passes and buying next season's lesson pack (and the sad thing is, there's still $600 left to be paid on the passes in the fall, although at least XH will have to pay for half of DS's) and then stopping off at the bike shop in search of a "big boy" bike for DS's birthday. I was SHOCKED that it really IS a big boy bike...I was expecting a little teeny bike, and nope...it's a serious bike! They had three used bikes in his size, and he picked the one that has gears and hand brakes and everything. I'm kind of floored at the thought of it. So, I put it on layaway and bought a set of training wheels. I'm super excited to get him on it, and hopefully he doesn't need the training wheels for that long. I have high hopes of not having to push the Chariot on runs sometime soon, but having him riding alongside me...

No word from the clinical placement coordinator today, not that I necessarily expected any.

rr~DS had a swim lesson at the Y this morning, so we went early so I could go to spin class. I don't know if it's my slacking off lately, or that it was a hard class, but I was dying. At least I got a good workout, either way, right? And then I squeezed in a quick brick, just to remind myself what it feels like. Only had time for 15 minutes, but I got a mile and a half in, and even did the last minute at a 7:30 pace! yikes.gif

I have a routine designed by a yoga teacher to strengthen/stretch my pelvis/hips/core. It's helping, but not quickly enough for me. Though the yoga teacher said that this would be a lesson in patience Sheepish.gif Good luck with the chiro!

Lax4, awesome run!!

tjsmama, I hope that the biking goes well. I love the runs with my oldest biking alongside (on our non-whining cycling days).

Does anyone know what happened to Motivated Mama? She was pregnant and running less, but I can't remember hearing from her again about the news of the ultrasound and whether it was twins...

I have a cold and skipped bootcamp tonight. I probably could have done it, but hate doing pushups when I have to choose between letting snot drip on the gym floor or trying to pull out a tissue. It's gross, but true. I did do the bike run to school for drop-off and pick-up today. I also took my youngest in the stroller for a bit of a hike and fiddlehead foraging, and made my first ever fiddlehead pickles. I've been "working from home" this week, but not doing so well on the getting work done without daycare for the youngest. Tomorrow is my last day of solo parenting, and then my husband will be home from his book tour/writers festival trip.

tjsmama--that new bike sounds exciting. And nice. R's bike definitely does not have gears. However, I refuse to invest in a new one until she agrees to take the training wheels off and learn to ride on two wheels.

Mel--I doubt you'll be last at the tri. I don't know--maybe it's just because mine is a couple of months out, but I keep thinking well, how hard can a sprint be, really? It's not as hard as a marathon, for sure. Maybe I'll be thinking differently once I start swimming, because right now denial is a fun place to be. lol.gif

La4--glad your 12 went well. As far as the knees: ibuprofen and arnica (pellets and cream if you have it).

JayGee--nice bike/run combo today!

RR: fit in an easy 3 with J while R was at school. I had to drop R off early for a strings rehearsal before their big concert last week, so I figured I'd have a little extra time. I did, but it got eaten up by stopping at the post office, for gas, and hanging out the laundry. Then when I started my legs felt kind of tired so I decided to save the hill repeats for a different day. AF is on its way, I think, and so the exhaustion is worse than normal.

tjsmama ~ very exciting about the bike!  With all the hills there, the gears are probably a good idea.  DD2 actually prefers her sister's geared bike to her own new one without gears eyesroll.gif.

Lala ~ great job on the 12 miles!

MelW ~ fiddlehead pickles?  Sounds interesting!

DD1 came home from school yesterday and fell asleep on the sofe (unheard of).  I woke her up around 6:00pm and she had a fever of 102.2, so school is definitely not happening for her today.

And a weird question ~ how can I get rid of a fungus that is inhabiting the band of my sportsbra?  Every time I wear it, I get a horrible, itchy, scaly rash that requires lots of Lotrimin to go away.  Hot water washing isn't cutting it.  Do I need to pitch it?  Gross, a fungal bra....

Hmm, I'm thinking vinegar. I used to use vinegar in the prewash for diapers and I think that was to cut down on bacteria. Although I guess a fungus isn't a bacteria, but still it is worth a try before tossing it!

MelW, fiddlehead pickles? I have never eaten a fiddlehead, pickled or otherwise, but that just sounds yummy. And I completely understand about the working from home=not being productive on some days, especially with the little ones.

Speaking of productivity, after 2 days of very little work as I waited for files to be ready for me, everything was sent to me all in a heap and now I'm up to my neck again. That is always the story! It would be so lovely to have some consistency, but who am I kidding.

RR: I ran on the beach yesterday for 3.1. I need to do more variation in running, some speedwork once a week would be good. Tonight is a planned bike ride, but with the work situation... we shall see.

Tea tree oil in the wash? That's how I got rid of yeast in my bras when I was nursing. Also a VERY hot wash, maybe a couple times.

No run today. Had my alarm set  but I had a period of 3 hrs. insomnia in the middle of the night so couldn't get up. I did do a good 4.2 yesterday morning although I am frustrated at my inability to get through what should be easy runs lately without taking walk breaks. It is getting hotter I guess and I'm still recovering from a bad stomach virus. Still, I need to step it back up again. I feel my body want to run but then I just get so tired.

I have a 5K on May 28th with my students for the last time, can you add the Sammy's Run for Oak Park School 5K, Jen?

I don't anticipate a PR there but hey, it will be fun to take my champ students out for a last run together before some of them graduate.

Ok, off to teach. We are having the class memorize Shakespeare passages. They think they can't do it and then when they can, and they 'get' it, it's so fun to watch.

Mel, if the bra is not valuable, I would pitch. But then, I am apparently prone to fungal things. I get major tinea versicolor blooms once in a while. Runs in my family. But TTO and vinegar are both good options to try first.

I am mostly just announcing my absence. Not only have I not been running, but I am also now offline at home. The good news is, this has so limited the amount of time I am seated at the kitchen table that some of my hip issues seem to be improving. bag.gif I come to the library daily to check email, since that's how I'm communicating with the relo people.

10 days to go. bigeyes.gif

I should have access once we arrive, and will certainly check in. blowkiss.gif

Hi Dingos!

I haven't caught up at all yet, just checking in.  The cruise was pretty fun.  Just watching the girls' faces every time the saw a character around the ship was priceless.  They really had a ball and they spent a lot of time in the kids' clubs (Ali G only grudgingly left for meals) which meant that DH and I had plenty of quiet time (although it was somewhat wasted due to someone forgetting bc was his responsibility irked.gif and both of us forgetting we could pick it up in SF).

Stopping in San Fran was very fun, lots of flashbacks to the mary, we were docked practically at the starting line.  The bummer was not having enough time to meet up with Poppy and being unable to imagine covering the same distance on foot at any speed these days.  We did a lot of walking but my hip was very achy afterward.  Wah.  But still, it was SF and I love love love being there.  And cruising under the GG Bridge was kind of awesome (and we did an extra RT into the bay because someone got very sick about 2 hours after we left and we went back to drop them off).  The one thing I hadn't been prepared for was the constant unending food, most of it awfully tempting.  I didn't actually gain any poundage but I still feel sort of toxic and blobbery from incessant overeating.  And I had very mixed feelings about how much food in general was being consumed and wasted.  The crew is completely non-US, many from very poor countries and imagining how they must see the passengers and the level of gluttony was pretty mortifying.  Wall-E anyone?  So, I wavered back and forth between mortification and surrender, walked the track a mile a day - not as much as I'd expected but much more than most - and thoroughly enjoyed being with such totally delighted children and an unexpectedly relaxed dh.

Now, back to real life.  Dh and I are starting out own little Biggest Loser challenge.  I'd like to be down 8 lbs by my birthday (one month) and down 12 lbs by the end of the summer.  I need to check measurements because weight seems kind of wishywashy but I did get my body composition checked on board and I'm at 31% body fat.  According to their suggestion if I lose 20 pounds I'll be at 21% but that seems unnecessarily low to me.  I'm just a middle aged mom after all.  So the high end of healthy will be just fine.

Jo - My hip hears your hip.  the more I sit the worse it is, even though a day of hiking around SF was also pretty tough.  I asked the chirp if he thought the SI Joint could be an issue and he dismissed it.  But, as he didn't have any real great success in 8 visits or so i think I'm going to move on.  The best thing he did was to work on my psoas.  Does that work for you?  I'm thinking about trying some targeted massage?  Or I don't know, a bullet to my brain?  Something has to change.

Okay, off to unpack, I'll try to get back later and catch up.  I'm running the lights for a show at the theatre for the next couple of weeks and they have wi-fi and inevitable downtime! Woo hoo!  Dingo time for me!

wave.gif Plady, sounds like a fun trip! I like that idea with the BL challenge. 8 lbs in 1 month is a lot!

blowkiss.gifBye Jo!!! Have a great last week here and all the best to you and your whole family for the move! happytears.gif

For fungus in a bra I would try tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract. If it is a cheap bra, I would just throw it away and treat yourself to a new one. As a last resort maybe try a touch of bleach?

Are you sure it is a fungal issue and not an allergic reaction to the elastic or other materials?

Jo, good luck with the final days before the move!

Nic, one last run with your students sounds fun. As does teaching them to memorize Shakespeare- I love it when kids are surprised by their own abilities :)

Plady, glad the cruise went well and the kids had fun.  I wonder if my BIL was on the same ship as you- he refinishes decks, and was on a Disney cruise last week, and was ending his trip in either Seattle or Victoria. I always get confused, though, since he was in the Bahamas the week before that (?). I'm still with you with stupid hips, ad currently in denial about a strange spot of foot numbness on my bad side...

RR- Biked to and from kindergarten again today, and will for pick-up, too. That's all. I'm still eating like a runner for the past few weeks, so going to need to do something about that if I can't get more exercise soon.

Mel, have you had your back checked out?  More work with my chiro has led us to the conclusion that what I've thought to be a foot/hip/knee issue is actually a herniation of my L5-S1 disc.  My back has always felt great, but apparently it's been the problem all along :(.  It is improving though and my running mileage is also up as a result.  Glad to know there is another dingo carting children to and from school via bicycle!

Jooj ~ 10 days?!  WOW!!!!!  Even if you're not online, know that I'm thinking of you during this big move.

Plady ~ sounds like a really fun cruise!  Keep us posted on your Biggest Loser challenge progress too.

MidwifeErika ~ I'm pretty sure it's fungus (goes away totally with Lotrimin, looks like ringworm).  The bra is old and kind of stretched out, so I think I'll just invest in a new one.

Nic ~ have a fun 5K with your students!

I have GOT to get my eating back under control.  I had been eating so well for almost 2 months and on Easter, I decided to have some jelly beans, because I love them.  Anyway, one handful of jelly beans has resulted in almost 10 days of sugar bingeing.  I feel crappy, and my formerly somewhat flat belly has returned to it's poochy, floppy, protruding state.  Sugar and I just cannot hang anymore.  No RR today, but in good news, they are finally digging the trench for my backyard retaining wall!
