Question about pumping and dumping

I had to take a med today that Dr Hale says wait 12 hours before nursing. How does that work exactly? Do I need to pump and dump or can I just wait 12 hours then nurse? Baby is 22 months, so she can have other foods.

Will the meds automatically be out if my system and not present in the milk then or do I need to actually pump and dump?

I would at least pump for comfort, but most meds the concentration in your milk decreases without needing to pump.

What rating is the med according to Dr. Hale's nursing guide?  I would think that if he says to wait 12 hours, I would only pump for comfort like PP said, but then you should be good to go after 12 hours.

At 22 months, honestly I wouldn't pump.  Your supply is probably stable enough that it's not going to plummet just from 12 hours without nursing.

I had an MRI when my daughter was 23 months old and couldn't nurse for 48 hours because of the contrast dye.  I didn't pump or express, didn't get engorged, and she nursed after the 48 hours without issue.
