Cord fell off a week ago and it's still bleeding.

DD's cord came off at 5 days. We weren't messing with it or anything, we just took off her onesie that morning and there was a belly button. It's been a week now and it's still bleeding. Tonight it bled enough to get on the inside of her onesie. It's not a lot - just clots constantly on her belly button no matter how much we clean it off. It does not seem sore or infected in any way. Should I be concerned?

DD had a bloody belly button until she was at least two weeks, DS until he was three weeks. I found it best to leave it alone for the most part and let it scab over.

My DD's belly button bled off and on for a week or so. I'd find dried blood on it or on her onesie. You could gently clean it off with a wet q-tip (the part that is visible). I had even asked her pedi about it and she wasn't concerned.

DD3's cord fell off at 5 days and bled on and off for about 3 weeks. Apparently as long as there is no foul smell, significant bleeding (more than a little smear) or yucky discharge, it's nothing to worry about.

please leave the blood there to scab, by washing it off all the time you are interfering with how a wound heals. if you had a cut on your arm, you would not pick the scab off every morning, you would leave it be till the scab served its purpose and fell off. this is the same thing.  keep it dry and only wash it if it gets poop on it. watch it for signs of infection (red, warm, puss) but mostly it will be totally fine.

Just to clarify, I meant she could clean off blood that is NOT at the site of the scab/stump, but elsewhere in the belly button area. I agree with leaving scabs alone.
