I really was hoping for a nice sunny day, or at least a day that was not raining so I could start working my compost into my garden.

Oh well.

When would be a good time to plant BEANS in to an outside raised bed garden in Anchorage? I have starters in my basement that are bursting to be replanted! I am also very eager but not eager enough to kill them by trying to plant too soon. Suggestions?

Hope you all have a wonderful May!

I would wait to memorial day. It is too early. Beans need to be covered in plastic or row cover at least for heat. Our beans are bursting and in need of transplanting too. We accidently left some out overnight and a bunch snapped because it got cold.

So fun! We're quite happy here already! Is there a mtng for the Birth Network thing in May? And does anyone have any info/experience with the LLL here in Anchorage? I'm curious....
Yes, our meeting was moved to May 15th, as to not conflict with Mother's Day the 8th.

www.alaskabirthnetwork.org

And there is no formal LLL in Anchorage, but there are a lot of CLCs and a group of Breastfeeding moms that used to meet at One Family.

I didn't know her well, but Kat was one of my favorite derby sisters! I'm just, ugh I don't know. Shocked & so so sad to think I'll never see her again. :-(

If you pray please keep the family in prayers - or good thoughts/ vibes, whatever you do.

Her Hubby was with her on the ride. I don't even know if they have kids or anything. Just she was the sweetest, most real person and always looking out for us, even the newbies she hardly knew.

Fatal motorcycle accident closes Old Glenn

Published on Saturday, May 7, 2011 8:18 PM AKDT

Alaska State Troopers closed the Old Glenn Highway at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after a fatal motorcycle accident at Mile 2.5.

Kathryn Ramsay, 40, of Wasilla was riding her 1984 Honda motorcycle southbound on the Old Glenn Highway near the power plant when she hit some gravel, struck the guardrail and her helmet flew off.

Ambulances called to respond "code red" returned to the station after the first responder on the scene determined Ramsay had no pulse, pupils fixed and dilated, deformity of the skull and other injuries "not conducive to life."

She was declared dead on scene, according to Trooper spokesperson Beth Ipsen. She said Ramsay was riding with her next of kin and two other motorcyclists when the accident occurred.

Nothing new on the job front, so it looks like we will be moving to Kotzbue in late July.

I have slightly mixed feelings, just because moving back to the bush wasn't my first choice...but I keep reminding myself that Kotz isn't like Pelican, there are 3500 people instead of just 70, and there will be mail every day. :)

Has anybody lived in Kotz? Or visited even? I'm hoping to make some contacts...

Otherwise, nothing particularly interesting going on around here...we've had a long and painful battle with thrush, which I think is more or less won, but my poor nipples are so sore and chapped that I'm still in some pain. :( I would very much like to never ever have to do that again.

Nobody on here this week. I am guessing we are all outside?? LOL

Took my 3 year old to Wonderland park & she learned to ride a bike this week! I foresee us spending a lot of time on the paved pathways there, with bikes & roller skates, this summer. :)

So we did it and all our bean plants died. :(

So we will just start over. Stupid Anchorage. Another reason why I loathe thee....

our beans typically grow really well but we wait until the very end of may to plant them. Snap peas will grow well into September with a nice summer.

And yes we have been playing outside and preparing for our new lo who should be arriving in the next 2 weeks
smile.gif
plus my mom arrives today so I'm cleaning. Now if the wind would stop blowing in the valley the weather would be awesome!

No worries! I planted seeds of Beans and Beets and Carrots today. My greenhouse is hot and ready for plants too. I have terrible luck here in Anchorage when it comes to tomatoes! I get nothing bigger then a Roma when I planted BIG ones! :( But I wont give up!

I heard from a guy that hanging basket cucumbers are the way to go so I'm working on that next.

My snap peas are a soaking and will be headed out tomorrow after my birth network meeting!

Anyone know where I can pick up KALE seed in anchorage?

Well kinda. LOL

My oldest is in the waldorf charter school here for social reasons - he's an aspie. The 3 year old goes to 2.5 hours of PreK 3x a week for speach - she has hearing difficulties. Until this year we did unschool them, still do when they are at home.

Subbing - sorry I fell off the wagon. Last days of the school year are HEC-TIC. For real. Last contract day is next Wed. So after that, I'll be more attentive.

Jenni - congrats on the move to Kotz! I bet you'll see a lot of the lights. I have a close friend who taught in Nome for a period of time and she enjoyed it quite a bit. Says it's fairly temperate, being by the ocean and all. I agree, it's probably a lot less like Pelican, and less off the path, despite being so far north.

So we made the jump - we'll be living summers in a camper! We purchased a 31 foot 1979 Airstream Land Yacht Sovereign! Our long term goal has always been to be camp hosts in the summer and live in seasonal rentals in the winter. This summer is a test, living on a friend's lot with hook-ups while we renovate/redecorate the camper. Then we'll be camp hosts next summer - yeah! In the midst of real de-cluttering for this too - personal growth and lifestyle changes. Love it. LOVE. IT.

Below is a pic of what ours looks like, but not ours. I'll upload our own pics soon!

What's up with that? Where'd my post go? Ugh, totally a decent sized post, too, that will never be rewritten to my liking!

Okay, so crazy busy with the end of the school year but subbing here anyways, trying to get back on the bandwagon.

Congrats, Jenni, on Kotz! I bet you'll see a lot of the lights. Also I had a friend who taught in Nome for a while and says it's actually a bit temperate there, because of the ocean and all. I agree, it's probably significantly less rural than Pelican, despite being so far north.

We are excited because we are moving into our NEW CAMPER for the summer! We're on a friend's lot with hookups but long term plan is to do the camp host thing and live in seasonal rentals in the winter. I'll post pics of our new camper soon, but its a 1979 31' Airstream Land Yacht Sovereign. Pics of cool vintage and remodels of that year are here if you are weird like me and like looking at that kind of thing. We are so pumped. Several cute names have been fielded by friends, including the "Aluminum Condominium" "Platinum Pad" and the "Chrome Crib".

Is anyone running the Midnight Sun Run here in Fairbanks? I am running as Batman with my Justice League team of a male Wonder Woman, The Green Hornet, The Flash, and Aquaman. We had a Robin, my running partner, but for some reason she planned a family visit to CA at the time, even though we had been planning to run as Batman and Robin all winter. If anyone wants to run with us, you are welcome to. Also, if you just want to follow us virtually, we have an events page. You can say you are attending even if it's from afar lol.

My DD used to run that. We missed the last one due to lack of funds. It;s $$ for a family of 6 to travel to Fairbanks just to run a race. :( but we were there the summer before that, rain so hard that weekend and our camper broke.
