Need natural air freshner for "feet" smell in front closet.

So I solved one problem I was having (shoes left all over) and now everyone puts their shoes in the front coat closet.  Awesome!

The problem is now it smells like feet.  Yuck.

Baking soda does nothing.  Tried those little gel pop up air fresheners and...eh.  I don't really like the fake scent and I think they only work for a few days anyways.

Thoughts?  It is a really small closet so it can't be overwhelming but has to be enough to cover the feet smell from all the shoes.  We also have coats in there and this is where guests hang coats so nothing that will make the coats reek.

I also cannot leave the doors open because the point was to get them out of reach of my lab who has a weakness for chewing shoes.

Any ideas?

For a while we were using tea tree oil in our bathroom, it might work for your closet too. We just had a cotton ball with a few drops of TTO and put in in a small container (votive holder actually) and it seemed to work pretty well -- need to add a few more drops whenever the scent wears off...

You could also try cedar chips?
