What's compatible with potatoes?! Potato newbie here

Thread Starter
I *really* want to maximize my little backyard garden space (and not waste water). There's a lot of distance between my potato plants (18" or so). I've been hilling them and a lot of the water runs into the lower spots b/w the potatoes. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that I could plant between them? (Also, I got them in a little late for my area - Houston- so some shade from taller plants wouldn't be so bad, right?)

Thanks!

I've heard green beans are very compatable and can be grown on top potato hills. Beans would definitely provide shade if you trellis them up.

Here's a link about companion plants for potatoes: http://organicgardening.about.com/od/vegetablesherbs/p/potatocompanions.htm
