Clomid and other drugs - risks?

I have been looking in to fertility medication, but wanted to ask about some of the risks vs benefits.

Due to our living circumstances my DH and I have a very short window in which we can get pregnant. My husband works for the South Korean military. He has a very narrow window of time in which, if we have a child, he can be present for the birth and help me take care of DS1. I teach here, and I also have a narrow window where I can give birth and be able to take a few months (3-5) to stay home with our 2nd before returning to work.

My husband's and my 'window of opportunity' gives us 3 ovulations in which to get pregnant.

After that - we'll have to wait several years before trying again... which would really not be ideal considering our ages (my husband is 40) - OR have me try to give birth in a foreign country with no family to help and an older child to care for while my husband is stationed elsewhere... and either lose my job and be in serious financial problems (going in to debt $1,000 a month or more until I can find work), or go back to work immediately after giving birth.

How risky is it really, to the child and mother, to use clomid to help you conceive in a specific window of time? I realize there's a higher chance to have multiples, which to me is a bonus actually since we can't do this again and we'd both prefer more than two kids.

Thanks

FYI, you might also want to post in the Infertility forum if you haven't already, as lots of ladies there have used Clomid.

Other than the risk of multiples, I don't know that Clomid poses any particular risks to mother and baby... it's probably the most widely used ovulation induction medicine, and has been used for a long time.

I'm curious, though... do you have regular cycles normally? If so, I don't think Clomid would really benefit you, and could, in fact, harm your chances of getting pregnant, since it's known to dry up cervical mucus and in some cases, thin uterine lining to the point that implantation won't  happen.

Monkey is very right about the drawbacks plus it can change the timing of your cycle and get it wonky if you already o fine. if you do O it does not really add anything, unless it has a issue to solve it can just get in the way.

if you really wanted to go no hold bar and get preggo you could do an IUI, that is thing that does not cost too much and ups your chances a lot. and since if you O already you can do it without drugs, it does not have any side effects and does not really cost that much at all

i would not do clomid on a normally cycling women
