This afternoon, my 5 year old son and I were downtown on a gorgeous spring day. An older man stopped us, and started talking to him. It quickly became clear that he thought my son was the child of a good friend of his. When DS said, "No, I don't have a father" the older man got very uncomfortable and started to stammer. DS then enthusiastically said, "You know why I don't have a father? Because I have TWO moms!!"

And the older man said, without missing a beat, "Then, you're the luckiest little dude I know."
(FTR, I don't actually think it is true that a child is lucky to not have a father, or that two moms are better than a mom and a dad, but I thought it was so incredibly sweet of the man to immediately figure out a way to make my son feel special and celebrated, instead of different and lacking).
