Portsmouth, NH? Tell me about it!!!

Hi folks,

My husband has a possible job opportunity in Portsmouth. What's it like? Do you live there? Is there a good natural parenting/green community there? We will be visiting next week. Any suggestions on areas we should check out while we are in town would be great.

Thanks so much in advance.

I love Portsmouth-- I grew up nearby. I can't speak to it's natural parenting, but eat at the Friendly Toast, and walk through Strawberry Banke-- it's a wonderful town.

Thank you! Is Strawberry Banke a neighborhood?

It's a museum, but it's surrounded with lots and lots of wonderful old homes, gardens and so forth. It's very picturesque/small town New Hampshire.

I would say that Portsmouth is a great little city.  We live in Durham, not far from Portsmouth.  There is so much to do, feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.  Good luck!

I love Portsmouth.  We've lived in the area for 15 years.  We're in Newmarket, about 25 minutes away.  I've worked at Strawbery Banke Museum - lovely place.  Across from that is Prescott Park with really beautiful gardens. - they also do summer outdoor theatre there, depending on when you visit.  They just had children's day a couple weeks ago, and Market Square day is in early June.  Arts scene is great with Seacoast Repertory, The Music Hall, and a new place associated with The Music Hall called The Loft.  A new artisan bakery is going in downtown.

Foodwise, I would recommend a trip to Beach Pea Bakery for lunch, a short trip over the border in Kittery.  The Friendly Toast (downtown Portmouth) and The Golden Egg (just south of town) are fun breakfast spots.  I shop at the Portsmouth Health Food store downtown - great little shop with knowledgeable staff.  There is a farmers market every Saturday just out of town, and surrounding towns have them as well on different days.

We're actually moving this summer as soon as our house sells, and I will definitely miss Portsmouth!  Enjoy your visit.

I live in Newmarket, about 20 minutes or so from Portsmouth. We are there very often. It's a great town with lots to offer and I would say that there are a lot of green things around especially in that area.

I won a retail cloth diaper store here in town and have many customers in that live in Portsmouth, it's great to be able to reach out to them and make that connection.

I have lived here my entire life, love this area. :)

Oh my gosh, small world! I just realized that you are in Newmarket too. There is a great place here called Get The Scoop. She makes fresh crepes and has Annebelle's iceceam, a must if you are out this way. :)

We LOVE, love, love Portsmouth!  We live about an hour away but head to Portsmouth at least once/month.  There is a great children's musuem in Dover- about 10 minutes away and we did have a MDC meetup there a while back...Friendly Toast Flatbread (organic brick oven pizza), and Annabelle's (ice cream) are our favorite places to take the kids to eat, so we'd rec'd checking them out.  And you've got the ocean so close!  We moved from upstate NY to NH 5 years ago and are SO happy with that decision- best of luck with yours!
