Can I sub pumpkin for butter in recipes?

Has anyone ever made brownies without butter by subbing canned pumpkin?  All the recipes I've seen online do a combo of butter and pumpkin or pumpkin butter and I just want to use pumpkin.  I really want to make brownies but can't justify making them with two sticks of butter since they'll be gone by tomorrow evening.

I often leave out oil (or significantly reduce it) or butter if I'm running low (often, lol), and just use whatever I have (mashed banana, pumpkin, squash, more milk/water, etc).  I started doing this when I realized it was really only in there for keeping the baked good moist for a longer time.  We'll just eat it before it dries out anyway.  Like last night I made a loaf of bread for toast for creamed eggs and gravy on toast.  The whole loaf went for that meal and we're putting gravy on it anyway...
