Please help, which temp to use? Over 1.1 dip from yesterday and then .5 jump in a minute?

Hi,

I'm new and just started charting.

I took the temp today and it was too much dip I need to ask this question.

Usually I take temp between 730-830am but this morning I had to go to bathroom around 515am so I went ahead and took the temperature in half asleep before getting out of the bed.  I'm in DPO 5 so my temp shifted to 98.5 range since O day (yesterday's (Monday) temp was 98.6, and 98.7 on Sunday) but the first temp I took this morning was 97.5 (1.1 dip from 98.6!).  I also remembered that I had my mouth open slightly (half asleep LOL)... So I took another one right after this, and it came 98F (whopping .5 jump within a minute?), and I took another one for the heck of it and it was 98.1.  Now which is correct one to use, first or second one???  Does open or closed mouth make this big difference when taking temperature??

Here is the chart, hopefully you guys can see it to explain better, maybe??

Thank you.

Hi!

I used to have that problem BIG TIME!  For me it wasn't just if I was a bit slackjaw'd or not, but if I had been drooling (LOL) my temp would be down just because there was that teensy opening (or so I guess...).  The big saver for me was when I realized that taking temps vaginally makes my temps much more stable/reliable.

As for which temp to use, I'd keep track of all three of them and see what happens tomorrow.  Most likely, the second or third temp would be correct, or "most" correct.  If your temps are still high tomorrow, you could just discard the one in question - regardless of which one you pick.  :)

Best of luck!

It sounds like your body is really sensitive to time change and temperature, so I would do exactly as you did and discard the temp for that day.  In the future if you need to get out of bed at 5:15 I wouldn't bother to temp at all- just temp when you wake up at 7:30-8:30.  I bet you'll find that you get a fine temp despite getting out of bed a few hours earlier.  Taking several temps in a row rarely improves accuracy.  You'll generally find as you wake up more your temp climbs.  It really needs to be taken consistently.  This could either be directly after you wake up for the day or a few minutes after you wake up for the day.  Just stay consistent.  Keep in mind, when charting, that the overall pattern is what is important, not one single temp.  I see by looking at your chart that you have a very clear O spike and biphasic pattern so no worries about that one temp at all.

Hi,

Thanks for you replies.  This morning's temp was 98.3.  I just don't know how I can have 97.5 and then 98.0 within a minutes (only difference was mouth closing) and wasn't sure which temp to record for the chart.

Yep, that makes a difference!  So for you, maybe waiting a minute after you wake up to temp would be best so that you're more awake and able to keep your mouth closed.  ROTFLMAO.gif
