During the summer months (which for us actually work out to be May through mid-August) we always use a literature-based theme to frame our homeschooling. In the past we've done fairy tales, Hogwarts Summer School, Olympian Camp (Percy Jackson), etc. We're doing a mystery/detective agency theme this year.
We always make shirts, which come in handy for field trips and such. (There's a picture above of the kids in the Camp Half-Blood shirts) We've decided on the name "Red Herring Detective Agency" with a Swedish fish on the front, but we're trying to come up with a "slogan". Katie Grace came up with "Always quick, never quiet" but we're open to other ideas.
I want to make this really fun for them. We had to skip it last summer because I was so sick when I was pregnant with the twins, and we've had a very non-creative school year. So far, we've read the first two books in Blue Balliet's series and just started book 3, The Calder Game. We've explored the art of Vermeer and had a lot of fun with pentominos, including making our own set of 3D pentominos, We're starting to learn about Frank Lloyd Wright and plan to go see Fallingwater later this summer. They're writing their own mysteries and we're exploring architecture.
Some of my other plans are to read the first Nancy Drew and first Hardy Boys books out loud as well as a Sisters Grimm book. I'm open to other mystery lit suggestions as well. I got some "Crime Scene Science" books we're going to use, and we're going to work in ancient history/mysteries as well.
Thanks for helping me make this summer awesome!
