cutting first molar - is this normal?

Hey mamas, so I have a question and I feel a little silly but this is my first baby and I just don't know what's normal! My son's bottom molar is coming in. It's been coming in for about 2 months. At this point it is almost as tall as his front teeth . . . but it hasn't broken the skin yet. It's like, this mountainous lump of gum in his mouth. Is that normal? I googled and I can't find any pictures of molars coming in, so I don't know what it's supposed to look like.

I can feel it just beginning to poke through when I put the Gum-omile on (great product, btw) but it's been like that for quite some time. It seriously looks like the tooth has completely come in but is encased in gum.

Any wise words would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First time mama here too. My DD has the same thing for both of her bottom molars. It feels like we've been waiting forever for them to come out. Two top ones already came down (gravity helps?).

I have no idea if it's normal or not, but we're in the same boat. Hope that helped. Good luck!

i'm a ftm too but dd is somewhat of an early teether.  she has those first molars (and we're getting towards the end with those, you know.. just 8 more to go, right?)

and there was lots of gum swelling and they did take a while.  and there was screaming.  and nightwaking.  and behaving randomly as though possessed.

then.. the other four and now dd is working on those dreaded two year molars.  they're similar and yet worse and i am told (shudder) they take even longer to come in.

popsicles (of just juice) and wet washcloths are your friends.  and i am not afraid to give out otc med for pain, either.  we do ibuprofin.

DS is 13 months and it took about 6 weeks of HUGE mounded gums to get his tooth finally through...and maniacal behavior all the while...it finally broke through and he is MUCH less clingy and is sleeping better.  Good luck.  It takes forever.

Same here with two big swollen molar lumps. DD is 16 months and no enamel in site. She has been teething for about 5 weeks now. We are just waiting. We use infant advil if we go a few bad nights but only on rare occasions. It is very difficult when she wakes us 5+ times a night but we just nurse and comfort. If DH didn't help at night after i nurse I would be insane, insane I tell you!

The 1 year molars were HE!! here too.  They were horrendous.  The 2yo molars are coming in now, and aren't nearly as bad - the bottom ones came in without much fan fare, and the top ones are taking longer, but don't seem too terrible.

OMG! I hate those molars! DS is 15 months old now and we've been fighting them since he was 12 months old. We FINALLY have all 4 molars broken through. I think it just happened this weekend. Lots of drooling, chewing on fingers and not sleeping. Do we get a rest now from teething?

Yup, until the 2yo molars, but those really aren't bad at all over here.

Thanks everyone for all the replies! This was very comforting . . . which I needed after 4 hours of wrestling my poor boy to sleep. After midnight and he's *finally* out. Oh, these molars . . .
