Dental implant: no bf-ing for a week??

Help! I just got back from seeing the surgeon that is going to put a dental implant in. He said the meds he gives after the implant is placed in the bone are not compatible w/ breastfeeding. He said the antibiotic is ok but not at the high dose he will prescribe and will also give something else (I thought he said cortico something, but it was all being translated from french, so I don't know exactly what med it is!! He said it helps w/ swelling and pain.) He recommended stopping bf-ing my 8mo old for a week. I have no frozen milk and have had trouble w/ both pumping and getting DS to take a bottle (though haven't tried much bottle feeding recently) I don't mind giving formula for a week (actually, yes I DO mind, but I will give it anyway) but wonder if I can pump enough during that week to keep supply up??

I would gladly put this surgury off, but we are in the process of moving back to the states in 6 months or so and an implant costs more than twice as much there than in france, so I need to do it soon!

Oh and on top of it, the surgeon made a remark to me about how "oh I can see if you want to wait until your baby is one year, but you don't want to nurse until he's TWO do you???!! Haha!" My french DH made sure to tell him, "Actually she nursed our daughter until 3!" I was so proud of DH for saying that! Especially since long term bfing is so rare here. =)

I would get the exact names and dosages of your proposed meds and look them up on kellymom or LLL or check our Dr. Hale's info.

The odds are definitely in your favor that your oral surgeon is woefully uneducated and you can safely nurse while recovering.  :)

I have nothing educated to add.  But, I've had three dental implants at once and the surgeon never told me not to breastfeed (and he knew I was breastfeeding).  I am sure I was prescribed pain meds, but I am pretty sure that I didn't take them, so that may not be any help at all.

I would ask for the medication names in writing, with the doses. Then you can look them up, or even phone www.infantrisk.org long distance if you need to.

I can't say for sure without knowing the medications, but I would be VERY surprised if your surgeon is correct.

I had a molar implant in Feb and was breastfeeding DS at the time. The perio gave me a light local anesthetic (w/o epinephrine because I'm sensitive), pulled the tooth, packed it with bone graft material, then did the implant in the same day. I was put on abx and a pain pill/motrin, which I hardly needed after the first day. He told me they were all fine for breastfeeding. I did not pump and dump or anything.

OP, don't call from France unless you can do it for free.  I'd be glad to call for you.  PM me if you want some help.  :)
