I'm about 14 weeks now (sonogram says 15, but I know better :D ). Maybe 3-4 weeks ago, I had some blood drawn at the midwife and sent for the usual tests for iron levels, rubella antibodies, yada yada. The GP called a few days later and said that my hemoglobin was "slightly low" and that she was leaving a prescription for me at the front desk, for super-iron tablets. When I got to the office, I asked the receptionist to check my other test results. Iron level and B12 both fine.
I started taking the iron, but had some of the normal symptoms like stomach grumbling and constipation. It wasn't too bad, but then after a few days, I got this metallic taste in my mouth. The tablet I was taking (Pregaday) had the equivalent of 100mg of iron. I stopped taking them after piecing together what the problem was. Sure enough, the metallic taste mostly disappeared.
I asked the midwife about all of this, but she said that this wasn't really her area of expertise. My main question is, that if my iron levels are good, then how will taking more iron help? I am taking a prenatal with 20 mg of iron in, and I'm getting a good deal in my diet too, as I've been craving protein and have largely gone off fruit. I'm eating a lot of salt, probably more than I should be, but aside from that, my diet's fairly healthy. I'm drinking orange juice like nobody's business, so plenty of vitamin C too.
I've had trouble with low hemoglobin before, due to some girly troubles, but my iron was always low too. I'm going to try and reach the GP this week, but just was hoping for some others' stories/ideas.
