I'm fascinated with this topic, and I've been thinking, you know, in traditional cultures there were a handful of stories that were told orally over and over again. Maybe hearing (or reading) the same story over and over fulfills some kind of linguistic or spiritual or social need.

My post should have mentioned the link between pleasure reading and COLLEGE admissions tests, not high school. I wasn't thinking clearly. Although I'm sure that if your kid wants to go to a competitive high school, lots of pleasure reading wouldn't hurt! But that's not the research I've seen. Sorry.
