How this works

If your name is listed above, this is a spotlight on you! Please answer all questions you have time for and feel comfortable answering.

Everyone else, ask questions of the five or six DDC members listed. Silly questions, serious questions, whatever you want to know!

When will everyone's thread happen?

I will start a new thread every Sunday. (If anyone else wants to help with this, PM me!)

We'll go in groups of 5-6, working our way down the list. Right now, that means the last spotlight thread will start in mid-September. I am taking the list from capretta's carefully maintained roster, so if you are not on that list, make sure to get on it if you want to be part of the spotlight threads.

What if I don't want to be in the spotlight?

That's OK. Just PM me to let me know. Or just don't answer any questions when your thread comes around.

We are going on the default assumption that people who have signed up on the roster are interested in talking with the rest of us and getting to know each other, but if you don't feel comfortable answering a bunch of questions on a public forum, that's perfectly OK.

What if someone doesn't answer?

This is one of the advantages of having so many people. With 5 people in the spotlight each week, chances are good that at least a few of each group will be able and willing to answer questions.

Questions to get us started:

What does your MDC user name mean? How did you choose it?

What are some causes / charities / etc. that are important to you?

Do you like to read? What are a few of your favorite books? (Either all-time faves, or ones you have read lately.)

What are your favorite guilty (or perhaps not so guilty) pleasures?

If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world, price no object, where would you go?

What were you like as a teenager? If you could go back in time, what would you tell your teenage self?

How do you think your background and childhood influence the way you approach parenting?

If you already have older children, tell us a little bit about each of them. If you are a first time mom, tell us what you are most excited about when it comes to starting a family.

1) my username , I love dragonflys and usually incorperate it into my usernames so dragonflymom made sense here orngbiggrin.gif

2) Causes I support are a bit varied, I support quite a fe GBLT and equal rights groups as well as arbor day foundation,WWF,Doctors across borders and ASPCA and local animal shelters.

3) I'm a big reader, most recently I read the hunger games trilogy and enjoyed it quite a bit. One of my all time favorites is Dracula by Bram Stoker.

4) Guilty pleasures..hmm...I watch Glee when I think my husband is asleep and I sneak spoonfulls of cream cheese icing all the time lol.

5)I have been dreaming of going to Africa, specifically the area of the Masi Mara where they filmed Big Cat Diaries...or I would love to visit New Zealand again.

6)I was a pretty mature teenager..I spent most of my time riding and finishing out horses as for advice for my former self....don't be so hard on yourself.

7)I have my degree in ECE and I work in childcare so I feel pretty prepared ...I had a pretty rough childhood with an abusive father and I think that motivates me to make sure my kid never goes through that.

8)I'm a first time mom unless you count my collection of pets lol....I think I'm most excited about meeting my little dude. I cannot wait to see how he takes after my husband and i.

What does your MDC user name mean? How did you choose it?
I used to show my dogs and my kennel name was Mythik Pointers, so everything is mythik.  I never got into breeding, just couldn't rationalize it and my one girl passed away last Fall at 10yo but her 1/2 sister is doing super at 11+yo.  We are going to get a purebred rescue after she passes on that my son and daughter will choose.  If they don't care for dogs, then maybe a cat or two :).

What are some causes / charities / etc. that are important to you?
I have volunteered many times over the last twelve years with animal rescue: transport, fostering, walking dogs at the local shelter, etc.  Since having my son I haven't had the time as I also WOHM right now so I do what I can.  I am looking to change up careers in the next few years where I am doing more public service, most likely being a special ed teacher.

Do you like to read? What are a few of your favorite books? (Either all-time faves, or ones you have read lately.)
I love to read, but frankly have been too absorbed in my knitting hobby over the past year.  I do have a few books on my nightstand but they sit there ignored for right now.

What are your favorite guilty (or perhaps not so guilty) pleasures?
I like to walk my dogs solo at some trails not too far from the house, it's my way to get some alone time :).

If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world, price no object, where would you go?
Knowing me it would be a few extremes so I would ideally like to spend 2 weeks in India and 2 weeks in Japan :).

What were you like as a teenager? If you could go back in time, what would you tell your teenage self?
I was pretty EMO (INFP/INTP) I suppose....I don't think I would change a thing about my life including that period.  I believe that what is...is what it is....

How do you think your background and childhood influence the way you approach parenting?
Quite strongly.  My mother and father were military and quite strict, I am a not that bad but can see where some of those traits manifest and I'm happy about it.  I have a lot of patience and work with things as they come being flexible...but there are certain things that are not ever ok and I put my food down heavily.  Gets me into trouble all the time.

If you already have older children, tell us a little bit about each of them. If you are a first time mom, tell us what you are most excited about when it comes to starting a family.

My son is 21.5mos and is my world.  I try not to remember life before him but am happy that I waited so long as I love my life (I had him two weeks shy of 37yo).  He is smart, verbal, sarcastic, funny, moody, mostly happy, opinionated, expressive and just the most amazing guy - EVAH!  I hope his sister is a ball buster and just as strong a person :).

Thx for letting me share.

What does your MDC user name mean? How did you choose it?

I was a lifeguard for years - it was a name I had used on other forums & just kept it. It doesn't fit as well now but...

What are some causes / charities / etc. that are important to you?

I've been involved in Girl Guides most of my life. Pets are important to me & we always adopt from a homeless shelter.

Do you like to read? What are a few of your favorite books? (Either all-time faves, or ones you have read lately.)

Love to read. Favourites: Clan of the Cave Bear series, Harry Potter series (I have read this many, many times as I find it relaxing bedtime reading without being too engagin)

What are your favorite guilty (or perhaps not so guilty) pleasures?

Eating.

If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world, price no object, where would you go?

I'm not sure I could choose. I'd love to see all 4 of the Guiding/Scouting World Centres. I'd also love to go to Antartica.

What were you like as a teenager? If you could go back in time, what would you tell your teenage self?

To be braver/bolder.

How do you think your background and childhood influence the way you approach parenting?

Yes. I think it would be hard for it not to. My Mom always told me how she was given SO much advice from everyone (she was 17 when she had me) & that she had to learn to listen & then do what felt right for her.

If you already have older children, tell us a little bit about each of them. If you are a first time mom, tell us what you are most excited about when it comes to starting a family.

Ds is 2.5 & my life. I am amazed every day that I get to love someone so wonderful. He's a pretty easy going, loving little guy but "all boy" in the traditional ways. He LOVES trucks, tractors, tools, anything with an engine but seems suspicious of dolls (& believe me he has access to them). He is very rough & tumble - I never thought I'd one day say "gentle" so many times!!!

What is your favorite, quick go to recipe?

Toast. Seriously, I don't cook.

Coffee or Tea?

Tea, I guess. I don't really do hot drinks often.

Do you plan to go grey with grace or dye?

Definitely grey with grace.

Do you watch TV, what is your favorite show?

More than I should. Big Bang Theory & (guilty pleasure) The Biggest Loser.

Soup, salad, sandwich - pick two and what type.

Creamy soups & pretty much any sandwich.

Summer or winter?

I really do enjoy both for different reasons but if I was stuck in one perpetually I would have to choose summer simply because I have cold urticaria & being cold makes me itchy.

Do you sing in the car? Only when you are alone or when you are with others?

Definitely! Generally when I have others in the car I turn off the radio so we can talk easier.

Sweet or savory for breakfast?

Sweet - for any meal!

Small town or big city? Do you live in one but long for the other?

We just moved to the country!

Any favorite blogs?

Yes, but I'll list them later as dh is getting anxious for me to go to bed.

What does your MDC user name mean? How did you choose it?

When I first came to MDC it was to the Queer Conceptions thread, so I made my user name a combo of my usual online name 'starling' and my dp's usual online name 'diesel.'

What are some causes / charities / etc. that are important to you?

Our local food bank is a big one for us, being that I was often hungry as a kid.  We also donate to a local charity that supports young moms dealing with poverty and abuse and addiction.  We also give to a charity that supports girls in developing countries access eduction and healthcare and small business opportunities.

Do you like to read? What are a few of your favorite books? (Either all-time faves, or ones you have read lately.)

Oh my goodness, I read all the time.  Some of my faves are Sarah Waters, Raymond Carver, Alice Munro, any compelling non-fiction.   I read about 2 books a week.  Right now I'm reading Annabel by Kathleen Winters, and Elizabeth Berg's new one, and Unconditional Parenting by Alphie Kohn and rereading Ina May Gaskin's Spiritual Midwifery

What are your favorite guilty (or perhaps not so guilty) pleasures?

Trashy magazines.

If you could take a one-month trip anywhere in the world, price no object, where would you go?

New Zealand, or Kenya, or back to Costa Rica.

What were you like as a teenager? If you could go back in time, what would you tell your teenage self?

I was smart and adventurous, yet crippled with anxiety and fear.  I'd tell my younger self to relax and take it all in stride.

How do you think your background and childhood influence the way you approach parenting?

Immensely.  I won't leave my child alone with anyone except my mother, my dp, or my sister.  I plan to homeschool.  I aim to be a playful yet firm parent.  I want to be home with my kids as much as possible.  All that is due to my own rather dark experiences as a small child.

If you already have older children, tell us a little bit about each of them. If you are a first time mom, tell us what you are most excited about when it comes to starting a family.

My daughter is my favourite human being.  She is kind, loving, bright, funny, and a joy to be around.  She's a consumate story teller, and loves playing make-believe.  She's polite, which charms the heck out of our elders especially.  She's ace at throwing a spectacular tea party, and loves to nurse her stuffies and love them up, and carry them around in her sling, which warms my heart.

Such interesting answers, thank you all for sharing! I especially love reading descriptions of everyone's older kids. love.gif DragonflyMom, I love dragonflies, too. We have a camping tradition with them. They were the first bugs that got DS past his, "AAAAA! BUUUUUGGGG!" reaction.

More questions:

What's your idea of a great weekend?

Do you have certain things you want to get done before the end of your pregnancy? If yes, what are they?

If you had a clone (i.e. very much like you) but who had to live a very different life from yours in an alternate reality, what kind of a life do you think she would have?

What do you see as your strengths and weaknesses (in life, parenting, work, you name it)?

Do you have any pet peeves? If yes, what are they?

Are there little things that make you way happier than one might expect for something seemingly inconsequential? If yes, what are they? (In case it isn't clear, I am asking about the opposite of pet peeves here, it's just hard to know what to call that!)

That's my DP's department.  She's a chef, so can whip up pretty much anything in a few minutes.

Coffee or Tea?

Coffee.  Decaf or not at all at the moment though.

Do you plan to go grey with grace or dye?

Going grey right now.  With grace?  Not sure about that.  I've got what's shaping up to be a streak of grey at the front.

Do you watch TV, what is your favorite show?

Not much of a TV watcher, but when I do it's usually HGTV.

Soup, salad, sandwich - pick two and what type.

Soup and gluten-free sandwich.  Cream of broccoli, and a nice jazzed-up BLT.

Summer or winter?

Spring and fall!

Do you sing in the car? Only when you are alone or when you are with others?

DD and I sing all the time.  Mostly Raffi and Show-tunes.  I definitely sing in the car.  Looking to join a local family choir soon!

Either one, but if it's sweet I have to mug of dark coffee with it, and if it's savory I have to have a big glass of ice-cold milk with it.

Small town or big city? Do you live in one but long for the other?

Meh.  Big city at the moment, but desperate to figure out a way to go back to our beloved small town.

Any favorite blogs?

I read iheartorganizing on a regular basis, and lesbiandad and majikfaeire's and cfhusband's blogs too.  How's that for WAY varied!

More questions:

What's your idea of a great weekend?

Camping!  By a remote lake! Fishing!  Trout on the campfire!  Waking up with the mist on the lake, and that little chill in the air that makes the morning campfire all that much more delicious.

Do you have certain things you want to get done before the end of your pregnancy? If yes, what are they?

1. Edit the manuscript that I'm working on now.

2. Complete the first draft of the next manuscript that I'm working on.

3. Get DD out of her diapers.

If you had a clone (i.e. very much like you) but who had to live a very different life from yours in an alternate reality, what kind of a life do you think she would have?

She would be a paramedic with Doctors Without Borders, helping out in disasters and with developing countries.  She would also be a wine snob.

What do you see as your strengths and weaknesses (in life, parenting, work, you name it)?

Strengths:  creative, great imagination, hard-working, playful, ambitious, frugal.

Weaknesses:  worrier, scatter-brained, space-cadet, impulsive.

Do you have any pet peeves? If yes, what are they?

People who smoke in public near my kid, people who spit in public, people who are terrible drivers.

Are there little things that make you way happier than one might expect for something seemingly inconsequential?

A clean house, the laundry put away, a good book, a trashy magazine, peace and quiet, among many, many others!

Tell us three things about yourself that we don't already know.

1. I'm fluent in ASL

2. I'm a divorcée

3. I have a whole bunch of tattoos

What's your idea of a great weekend?

Canoeing or backpacking somewhere away from other people with someone(s) I enjoy.

Do you have certain things you want to get done before the end of your pregnancy? If yes, what are they?

-get totally settled into this new house. Shelves built, all boxes unpacked, everything in it's place.

-make a couple special little things for the baby

If you had a clone (i.e. very much like you) but who had to live a very different life from yours in an alternate reality, what kind of a life do you think she would have?

In dreadlocks & a skirt she'd be travelling the world.

What do you see as your strengths and weaknesses (in life, parenting, work, you name it)?

Strengths: persistent, kind, hard working, organized

Weaknesses: a tendency towards ocd, cry too easily, lack of self-confidence

Do you have any pet peeves? If yes, what are they?

-lately it's been lack of driving etiquette

-dh's inability to cook tidily

Are there little things that make you way happier than one might expect for something seemingly inconsequential? If yes, what are they? (In case it isn't clear, I am asking about the opposite of pet peeves here, it's just hard to know what to call that!)

-everything put away just right

-finishing a project

-watching ds

Tell us three things about yourself that we don't already know.

-I met & started dating my dh when I was 17. I'd never really dated before that.

-I spent most of my 20's in a cyclical depression

-One day when I hit my weight loss goal I plan to FINALLY get a tattoo.

Lifeguard - I remember you saying in a thread somewhere that you were a Girl Guide leader - me too!  What branch(es)?  I have done Guides for several years, but have been taking time away from it through these baby and toddler years.  I miss the girls!

Katico - I usually stick to Pathfinders. The past 2 years I've been doing Pathfinders (actually we technically have a Trex unit) & Guides because we are short leaders. I contemplated doing Sparks to keep the unit open last year (thank goodness we found new leaders this year) but I just couldn't bring myself to do it - I like the older girls! I'm taking a break from the unit next year but will stay registered so will likely go to camp with them. I am also a Safe Guide assessor for yellow level & water activities for Ontario now so that'll keep me involved next year.

Where are you located?
