5 y.o complaining that his penis is hurting/itching

Everything looks normal down there - not seeing any redness, etc.  He is uncircumcized.  I took him to the doctor and he said it's possible it could be yeast and suggested we get over the counter Lotrimin to put on it.  DS said that really hurt when he put the cream on, so now i'm wondering what to do.  I've left a message at the doctor's office.  Has anyone else dealt with this and is there something else we could try?  His penis is not red or infected looking so i'm guessing it's a mild yeast infection, if that is indeed what is wrong.  ugh.. my poor little guy!

Has he been doing any activity where he has something between his legs? My son has complained the same way before and everything looked perfectly fine to me and we've come to realize it happens when he bounces a lot on one of those big balls that has a handle type thing that he hangs onto and it comes between his legs. We keep one of these in the living room and he goes through periods of bouncing on it a lot! lol Anyway that's what has happened with him.

There was something else that he was doing that was causing pain/irritation too...I'm trying to think what it was. Maybe swinging on a tire swing - there's one at my mom's and I think when he'd straddled it he would be uncomfortable later.

Any discharge at all? My 2 year old complained that it hurt really bad, so I washed it out (by gently pulling foreskin forward and filling with warm water, then gently pulling back to get water out). I put some Neosporin on it and he went to bed. In the morning he woke up and said it was very itchy. I took his diaper off and some white stuff (smegma?) came out from under the foreskin. He was fine after that.

How retractable is he? My son's is not at all retractable and I think stuff just collected under it (even though I try to wash it well without pulling back) and maybe got a little infected....

My DH (who is also uncirced) told me the best way to wash is to not pull back, but gently forward on the foreskin to get water in there. He said pulling it back when washing actually traps the stuff in there and pushes it down. I don't know if that's true....But he's the one with the goods, so he probably knows what he is talking about.

Hope your little guy feels better soon!
