going in toilet at 9 months

Hi Moms!

This is my first post, although I've been visiting for months. :o) A week ago, I tried sitting my DD on the toilet when I could tell she needed to poop. (after BFing after her morning nap -- she typically poops then) She peed and then pooped immediately. So I tried it the next morning, saying "do you need to go poop?" and it worked again. She's since done it for a week straight, every morning.

Has anyone else experienced this and had it lead to potty-training? Or is it a fluke right now? There are other times during the day when she poops in her diaper and I didn't anticipate it. I don't want to confuse her by having her go sometimes in the toilet, and sometimes in her diaper. Or is that not a worry at this point?

I wouldn't worry about it at this point and just be happy that you've got a regular little one and you're catching some of the poops!

DS has been pooping on the toilet since about 6 months (he's 15 months now). Not all the time, but I'd say I catch about 75% of the poops. If I don't catch him in time, he uses his diaper. No confusion at all, but his skin is much healthier for catching the ones I do :)

knowing your baby's cues and then catching pees or poops is called elimination communication (EC).  There is a forum on mothering (under Diapering) that is for EC.  They will have lots more information there if you are interested in learning more about it.  It can lead to a very early potty-trained toddler winky.gif

Thanks, all, for the replies. I'm going to try to catch more of her poops and will check out the EC forum!

I suggest getting a Baby Bjorn little potty and put it in your bathroom.  When ever YOU need to go, assume your DD does too!  Also try offering the potty when she first wakes up or before she's nursed down.  Don't put too many toys in there with the potty though or she will be too focused on play to think about going.
