When to give Probiotics? (what time)

My DS2 (9 months) is on antibiotics for a UTI. I want to give him probiotics to help his tummy/digestive system with this. His antibiotic is a daily dose, we give it to him between 6:30-7:00 pm. When should I give him the probiotic for it to be the most effective? At the same time, in the morning, noon, or other?

TIA :)

Definitely in the morning. I would actually probably even give it more than once a day. Not sure what brand you have and how many billions are in each pill (is it made for kids or an adult one? ). Look at those - give a full dose in the morning. Then maybe divide a dose for lunch then again a few hours before the abx if the billions are pretty high. Or you could just divide one dose over the course of the day if it's a high dose. I've done both in different circumstances, but I've been giving probiotics to my son for a while now, so I know how much I can up his dose or spread it out now when needed.

Some other mama's on here know more about which type of probiotic is better for countering abx...hopefully they can help a little.

I know at that age I was still giving my son one with a large amount of bifidobacteria in it.

Definitely avoid anything sugary while doing the course (although at 9 months not sure if you're doing cookies or anything yet anyway?)

Keep up the probiotics after the abx are done for a couple of weeks too.

Thanks! I have BioGaia for him. I'm not sure how many millions/billions there are... it's not on the bottle (was on the box). It's a liquid, and a dose is 5 drops. If something else would be better for him, I'm game. He is VERY prone to yeast diaper rashes (had one basically from birth until 7 months old), so we need all the help we can get.

No, he's not eating any sugar really. He doesn't eat a ton of solids at this point. I'm going to try to keep my sugar consumption down too.

Personally I would not use this brand. It has only 1 strain of beneficial bacteria and not the right kind for help with mitigating antibiotic side effects and disruption of gut homeostasis. You want to be giving a product with Lactobacillus, and  Bifidobacterium at the very least. There are alot of crappy probiotics on the market and IMO you get what you pay for. Also I look for a product with at least 10 billion plus cfu's (colony forming units) the above product has only 100 million. Not strong enough IMO.

I used this product for my DS until he was 2 - this is an excellent product IMO

just mix with a little breast milk

Thanks Marnica, I'm totally up for recommendations smile.gif Your recommendation looks good... I just checked and unfortunately I can't get it in Canada.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a good probiotic available in Canada?

Thanks again!!

I get Kirkman dairy free bifido formula. http://www.spectrumsupplements.com/content.asp?node=92&pgid=221&lang=en They ship out of Quebec and really pack their products well for shipping. If you ship tomorrow (call them) they may be able to get it to you by the weekend.

I'm in Canada too.  Try looking for Genestra brand...HMF Natogen or HMF powder.
