Toddler Bed question

Hi All -

My LO is now two and still sleeping in her crib.  She has recently been able to climb into her crib and we think it's time to transition to a toddler bed.  I have a few concerns.

First, during the nights when she sleeps with Dh and me, she tosses & turns ALL OVER the bed, head over heels, left & right, I am concerned she'll fall out of any other bed.

Second, I am concerned she'll get up in the middle of the night and wander through the house unsupervised and I'm concerned she'll get into something while we are sleeping.

When did you transition to toddler bed?

What kind of toddler bed?

Any ideas how to handle a midnight-roving toddler?

Thank you!

DD just has a mattress on the floor of her room (I've been drooling over a beautiful wooden loft bed that has a built in desk and drawer but we won't buy that for awhile) so rolling off of it isn't a concern for us.  She's already taking her naps there on weekends (weekdays she's at a full-day Montessori preschool so they have floor beds there too).

However, at nights she's still cosleeping with us and we're realizing that time is ending QUICKLY. One of her favorite games at night is "where can i stick my feet to annoy my parents?".  Ugh.  My main concern is that she'll wander at night too and also going to the bathroom first thing in the morning to avoid accidents...

DD has a mattress on the floor, so if she rolls off, no biggy if she rolls off. for night wandering, she has a doorknob cover on the inside of her door (not my ideal, but we're not ready for the stay in your bed fight)

i'm planning to put a baby gate across the open doorway of my dd's room when we move next month. for now she's still in her crib, but we're moving to a place where she'll have her own bedroom and i'm planning to transition right to a floor bed. because her bedroom will be near the front door (although right across the hall from us), and i don't like to close her door fully at night, i figure a baby gate will at least slow her down a little and mostly contain her in her room at night and naps

he have a "this end up" bed which we're setting up shortly as DS can get out of the pack n play now.  He's just over 2.  It's an all wooden bed (twin) that has rails for all sides.  DS is cautious enough that I hope it'll keep him in there.  But, we also shut his bedroom door and there is a door knob cover to keep little hands from opening the door.  We shall see how it goes.  For a while we're leaving both beds (pack n play and big boy bed) up and ready so he can choose which bed to go to sleep in.  Here's hoping!!!
