That stinks! Admin... really? What kind of picture are you trying to paint here? You are going to lose old, and valued members of this community if you continue in this vein.

I changed my location this morning to increase privacy and you guys are broadcasting the change?!!!!!hopmad.gif

And will that thread then be flagged in some way so that the rest of the posters, not just the OP, know that it has gone on FB/Twitter?

Yes, if we feature something *with the permission of the OP* we will post to the thread to let folks know that it has been featured on FB/Twitter.

If something is started by Mothering (the User Name) then you should assume it is fair game to be featured and post, or not, accordingly.

Whoa!  Where are you looking to see this?  I am not even seeing a Current Discussions tab, nor am I seeing philomom referenced anywhere.  Under the discussions tab there are discussions that were started on FB, but the most recent is two weeks ago.  Please, do not assume the worst right off the bat.  I honestly have no idea where you are seeing this information. No need for the hopmad smiley just yet....

As far as I can tell, change of location, etc., only shows up here under the newsfeed - not Facebook. That's how it's been since the change; it's similar to how FB works, but the two are not intertwined (unless you are purposely using the connect with facebook option).

Are you talking about this tab?

Because that's on our website, not connected to facebook.

Dawningmama just pointed it out in the thread in TAO - apparently it does pull info off MDC onto FB. Weird - I've never noticed that feature before.

Yes! This is why I don't "like" mothering on FB! The scenario you describe is still possible as long as you "like" mothering on Facebook even if Mothering stops posting threads over there. Your friends see that you like mothering, click on the page, click through to the sight and start looking through threads to see if they can find you. Kinda paranoid, but I'm not risking it!!

In the scenario you describe, someone who isn't on FB has no increased privacy issues when mothering posts threads on Facebook. Unless there is more to this than I understand.

If you aren't on FB or don't "like" mothering you shouldn't run into any problems...if you arent on FB you have no increased privacy concerns over Google searches. FB has become one more way for people to search the web and connect to other communities. unless I am STILL missing something??

I think she is talking about this:

Top half of the page looks like this:

motheringscreenshotnew.JPG

It is located under the "Join the Community" tab on the Mothering FB page.

Yep, I found it and am working on getting it disabled.  There will likely be a feed there of some sort in the future, but it will be to something that Mothering has generated, or something like the Contests forum.

ETA: Melanie, our web editor, will have this disabled today.  She also wanted me to pass on that the location changes appearing was not intentional, and that she has not seen it do that before.  It should have only been a feed of the newest threads.

I signed into Facebook's Mothering Magazine page.  Then I clicked, within FB on the left hand side tab that said "join the community".  And, there it was. Within that FB page, it said Current Discussions which wasn't a tab...it was a headline and then all the updates/discussion.  Including Philomom's and another mom's location change.  I just signed in again and the whole entire thing is gone including the "Current Discussions."  It was there when I posted......... for sure.  How else would I know philomom changed her location?  And also chaoticsmom or some screen name like that....

Okay good...you saw it.  I read your post after my reply.  Thanks

So have all threads been linked on FB there?  Not on the feed but in that area?  That really really really stinks.  Really.  Are they sure that no threads from the SA or PAP or TAO forums were posted?  If they were not aware that location changes post there, maybe our "safe" forums have been posting there as well and they just weren't aware of it.

This newest issue with FB is once again proof that MDC really needs to be aware of all aspects of the use of technology PRIOR to using it.

Or at least let everyone know that there's experimenting going on...

Yeah...the fact that people are having to point these things out is really starting to bug me.

I just got a PM from one of my MDC friends who tells me that usernames here are clickable from Fbook and they do share your MDC profile. Gah! I didn't join Fbook... I joined Mothering.. a place I have supported for nearly 20 years through the magazine, book orders and reprints.

I can't find your name on facebook (anymore, I did see what you were talking about earlier before it was removed).

Good, maybe this was earlier. I did go out for lunch and then picked up my kids at school.

Thanks to everyone helping to set things right.

I went to FB this morning and I no longer see all those posts and Philomom's location change.  Thanks for making this right MDC!!!

I'm sorry. This is just not acceptable. I try to keep myself fairly anonymous. I know that threads here are there for the world to see, but generally a person would have to go looking for it, to find specific information.  I do NOT want what I am typing here to be broadcast out on facebook. I put my information HERE, and NOT on facebook. I never signed up for that.

For admins to then just simply state, "It's fair game", is ridiculous.  I guess I will not be posting here much anymore, and will now go back through my threads and start deleting information that I put out in this board.

I think perhaps you misunderstood.  *ONLY* threads started by the Mothering user name will be featured on facebook/twitter. If we find a thread that is something we wish to feature we will ask for the OPs permission and post to the thread to notify folks it is being featured.  The only threads that I referred to as fair game are the ones started by Mothering (i.e. us.) Not that all threads are fair game.  You do not need to delete your posts.
