Tucson, SCD food

This is an offering to any and all who may need guidance with the SCD diet.  I have been on it over one year and I know how incredibly time consuming and overwhelming it can be for any mom to either do the diet themselves or try and keep a child on it.  It is mostly for those with autism, autism spectrum, or ADD or ADHD.  Also some adults (like me) who are celiac but need more diet refinement go on the diet.

Anyway, I live in central Tucson and would love to help.

Hi!

I found this message when I searched for Tucson and SCD.  I am doing SCD for myself as I have ulcerative colitis.  Any tips on where to buy ingredients are greatly appreciated!  I mostly buy meat & produce from Sunflower.  I'm trying to make my own yogurt using a heating pad and organic strauss milk from Whole Foods but no success yet (the heating pad I bought has auto shut-off - d'oh! so I put the milk in the oven but it got too hot so now I have this lumpy mess on my hands).  I've only been doing SCD for 3 days so I'm still on the intro diet.

I don't know what an SCD diet is. We are gluten, dairy, cane sugar, and tomato free.

Regarding making yogurt. My SIL mentioned she is making it in the crockpot. I googled crockpot yogurt and got many hits, but it's too late to read any.

SCD is very similar to what you're doing, it stands for specific carbohydrate diet.  It is gluten-free but there are also many food items which are considered 'illegal' on the diet.  The theory is that when your gut is damaged (as with UC) you cannot absorb complex carbs, polysaccharides and can only absorb disaccharides.  To that end, all processed foods, wheat and other grains, any form of sugar apart from honey are eliminated.

oh my, yeah!!!  Others on SCD in Tucson!!!

Just an FYI, the diet is also called GAPS diet.

I too tried homemade 24 hour yogurt several times and failed.  I finally splurged and got a yogurt maker and now make 24 hour goat yogurt all the time.  Not to be judging, but just doing intro sounds a little early to be making yogurt?  I guess it depends on your condition but I thought yogurt was a more 'advanced' food.  Maybe I am not remembering correctly.

Anyway, please don't hesitate to PM me or just keep posting.  I find it difficult to find the time to prepare all of 'my' foods, that is the most challanging for me right now.

How is the intro going for you?

That depends.  If you're intolerant of dairy then you shouldn't have yoghurt but I have always been ok with dairy and I enjoy the yoghurt a lot.  So far I haven't had any kind of reaction from it, so I think it's all good.
