Desperately needing some advice and reassurance!!
DD is 8 1/2 weeks old and has not latched on correctly from the very beginning. First I believe it was due to OALD, but now I think it's become a very bad habit and I'm not sure how to break it! Basically, she keeps her tongue bunched up in the back of her mouth, but CAN extend her tongue out very far just won't do it while latching. She'll extend it if I touch her top lip with my finger only, but it happens SO quickly that I can't get the breast to it fast enough. Her latch looks perfect from the outside, mouth wide and lips flanged outward.. but my nipple comes out the shape of a lipstick, and raw & red.
I've tried holding out on her to open her mouth wide and tongue out, but she just doesn't get it and gets hysterical which of course ends with us both crying and me giving in to her to nurse how she wants.
She also has been having EXTREME smelly gas and BMs are light green in color. I know this can be a symptom of foremilk-hindmilk issues but I only feed her from one breast per feeding so I just don't know how that could be the case?? She seems to be gaining weight fine, and doesn't have the colicky symptoms that come with the f-h imbalance. Are these issues related or am I dealing with two seperate things here?? And please someone tell me that they have survived this latch and were able to fix it!! I have very little help in my city(LCs are a JOKE, no LLL, closest IBCLC is 130 miles away) so I'm kinda going at this on my own or off the advice of friends.I have hopes to be an extended nurser, but at this rate I am just so frustrated and discouraged I don't really know how long we'll last. ![]()
