Positive OPK at 10 DPO, BFN on HPT?

Yesterday at 9 dpo I tested with some hpt strips that I had. In the morning I got a very faint line, and in the evening it was darker.  I was so excited and decided to test this morning at 10 dpo with a First Response.  It had no second line at all.  This evening I took an opk and it was positive.  I'm going to wait a few days and test again. What do you think the probability is that I am pregnant?

Hmmmm....  HPT's certainly have varying sensitivities such that you could get a positive on one type and not another when you're testing this early.  However, FR HPT needs a level of 25 and I think most dollar store tests are 25-50 so that wouldn't make a lot of sense.  But a positive HPT is a positive HPT.  They don't turn positive for no reason, especially two of them.   As for the OPK, was it a super faint line?  I can't imagine it means anything.

I would just chalk it up to differences in tests and test again tomorrow or the next day if you can wait.  Your levels should have doubled by then if the pregnancy is viable.  I will add this, though, not to depress you, but just as my own experience.  The cycle prior to conceiving my first, I tested on CD 12 and got faint positive only to get a negative the next day and my period the following day.  Your situation could also be a situation like mine: a chemical pregnancy.

Thanks so much for responding. I bought the strip hpts from Amazon from Formosa medical.  They are the same kind as the opks. With the hpts, the first line was soooo light I thought I was imagining it, but the second one was much easier to see.  And now you can totally see the line with the second one.  The opk was a pretty dark line, almost as dark as the control! :)

Eek!  I hope that I find out I'm pregnant soon.  I have been so impatient and it sucks waiting these two weeks!

Hopefully someone else can respond the the OPK situation.  I really don't know why you would get a positive that far after ovulation.

The HPT's are generally not reliable after 10 minutes, so a very dark line now doesn't mean anything, but a dark line within the correct window of time is definitely a positive.  And the fact that you got a super faint and then a darker one indicates that your hCG levels are increasing, so not just a fluke.

I guess wait a few days and test again and/or go in for a blood test.  :)

If you're wondering about using your OPK's as a pregnancy test, check out this site: http://www.peeonastick.com/opkhpt.html

It seems pretty clear that the line would need to be darker than the control AND that this would mean there is more than enough hCG to test positive on any HPT.  With a negative FR, it seems unlikely that your OPK is telling you anything at this point.  I would go for a different HPT first.  :)

I think I'm going to wait until I'm 12 or 13 dpo and then test again. I think it will only make it worse if I test again tomorrow and it's negative.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed!  Here's my chart if you are interested: http://fertilityfriend.com/home/jenv

Your chart still looks great and triphasic.  I'm surprised by the one BFN, especially since you're a few days past last cycle's LP length.  You're right, testing in a few days would be best b/c either AF will show or you should get BFP's on any and all tests.  :)

I tested yesterday morning and got a positive!  I'm waiting until tomorrow (13 dpo) to try the First Response again... I can't see how it won't be positive! :)  Thanks so much for your help!!

Thanks!! I don't believe it yet but I think after a few weeks it will feel real!

CONGRATS! The only thing I can think of is maybe you drank a lot before the negative one- so the HcG was more dilute :)

I was realizing that perhaps you had a First Response One Step and not a FR Early Result?  The latter needs a level of 25 and the former needs 100.   Either way you've got a BFP now!  thumb.gif
