letter obsession - this is normal, right?

Just wondering how many other kids out there went through this.  DS points letters out everywhere, says his puzzle pieces look like letters, plays with the fridge magnet letters several hours a day, wants to sleep with the fridge letters, requests the abc sond at bedtime, wakes in the middle of the night saying the b says buh(then back to sleep), and totally loses it when he has to share the foam letters at the library with another kid.  Should i maybe take the fridge magnets down for awhile?  There's so much more to do in life than obsess over letters.  I don't want him to miss out on other things.

You don't say how old your DC is, but yeah, it's pretty normal. DS1 was an early reader and he was like that at age 2-3.  When he had mastery and could read, it quit.

It's likely to be a fairly short-lived phase. I think it's fine, as long as you are doing other stuff, too. DD and DS both were like this for a bit and then the phase ended.

He's 26 months and this has been going on for almost 5 months now.

Ds1 was just like that as a toddler.  I remember one day taking out the train set, but for the train to keep his attention for any length of time I had to have it go to "Letter Land" - a pile of letters.  He learned to read at age 2 and the letter obsession was fairly short looking back on it.  Actually at 6yo he still asks dh to sing him the ABC song at bedtime!  :)
