My son is ready to potty train, and I'm not!

Help! I am totally unprepared for this.

I thought I would wait until my son's verbal skills were a little more developed before I started potty training. He just pulled out his potty, set it in the middle of the floor, pulled his pants and diaper off, and sat down! I usually let him in the bathroom with me when I go, and he always gets me some TP and flushes, so I guess he has learned just from watching? He's been telling me for about a month or two after he poops, but for about the past week, he's been telling me before he has to poop.

It sounds like he is ready, but I'm not. The most I've done is buy that potty. I have no idea what to do! He's 27 months old and has a very limited vocabulary. What do I do now???

Really, I wouldn't push anything.  He may or may not be ready.  Encourage him to sit on it after his naps and periodically throughout the day and see how it goes.  My 21mo DD has been showing all the same signs as your DS, even used the potty maybe times.  However, she's still not really ready to be trained.  Sometimes I let her go a few hours here and there with no diaper, but she rarely makes it to the potty.   She has the basic idea, likes to sit on it, use the tp, etc..  Anyway, when a child is ready it should happen easily, if it's becoming frustrating at all, stop and try again later.  :)

Oh, thank you!

I am really overwhelmed by this, and I've been avoiding the subject. Thank you for reminding me that this is a process, and it doesn't happen overnight. I don't know why I had the idea that once we start, there's no going back.

My DD started before 2 to say she had to use the potty.  I kept her in a diaper for 3 months after she started.  Sometimes the diapers were completely dry and other times wet and poopy.  Eventually she was dry 90% of the time and we moved to underwear.  I also put her on the potty before and after sleeping without her asking after she started the 'training' process.

all 4 of my boys were out of daytime diapers by 30 months.   I would go with it.   In some children if you dont  take advantage of early signs then they balk at giving up diapers later on.   We just spent the past couple weeks doing "boot camp" with Jack ... lots of naked time and several potties.  He has only had one pee accident in the past 2 weeks.
