Booster for vacation only?

We are going to MA in August to visit my mom.  We are taking the train there.  DS will be 4 in August.  He is over 40lbs (might be closer to 45 or even more, hasn't been weighed in a while), he's 42 inches or so tall (yes he's a giant kid!)

He rides in a Frontier in our car and that isn't changing anytime soon.  He fits well in it and likes it.

BUT we are traveling on the train, with all of our stuff, and my mom doesn't have a car full time when she's in Mass so she'll be renting a car.....so I was thinking about getting him a high back booster for this trip.

I would ride in the back of the car with him whenever we were in the car (I do most of the time anyway).  We won't be driving that much.  Mostly we'll be walking and hanging out near the water anyway.  So we wouldn't use it that much while we were there, although we may do a day trip somewhere with a bit of a drive.

So, is this cool?  Or do I actually *need* to lug our Frontier on the train and all over?

I would get a cheaper high back booster (like the turbo) and try him in it for short trips.  If he sits ok, then bring it.  If not, you could look into a travel vest.

I wouldn't lug a frontier around, I'd get a lightweight harnessed seat.  The Maestro or Apex would be good choices, both harness to 5- or 65, and have highish top slots, and can be bough for about $80 or less.  They are definitely light enough to carry on the train, and they can be stored in the accesible storage compartments on the bottom level.  A barely 4 year old isn't old enough, and his bones and musculature aren't strong enough, regardless of his size, to be As safe in a booster as I would want a child to be.  He still needs the 5 pt harness to distribute the forces.  It's not much more than you'd spend on a highback booster anyways.  I'd want to be sure on his weight though.  :)
