Just a heads up, I saw a commercial for a story about unlicenced midwives that will be on tonight's 11pm news, channel 7 (abc). I don't think I can stay up for it, hopefully they will replay it in the morning. From the preview it definately does not look like a positive story about homebirth.
unlicensed midwife news on abc detroit
Other than discussing the results of one woman's sad experience with one specific midwife, the story was also about the current movement for CPMs to become licensed in Michigan. Currently neither NARM nor MMA have any authority to ensure that a midwife who may be incompetent or has had her credentials revoked actually stops practicing. Licensing midwives and hopefully setting up a separate board of midwifery for CPMs and CNMs would provide more public protection and a place for consumers to file complaints.
The report did not include anything bad about home births. I don't think home births were even mentioned. It was about the potential dangers of unlicensed health care providers, in this case a midwife.
