DS has been asking and asking me. The only one I've found is the BBC one, which is good, but just wondering if there are any U.S. options.

He's 7-1/2, but has a much higher reading/comprehension level.

thanks,

what do you mean by good?

news for children

or balanced news?

or news that keeps death/killing events to a minimum.

if you mean balanced news i would encourage him to read the top newspapers from all over the world which is what i do.

for the US i go with nyt and npr. leaning heavily on npr. i usually have NPR on quite a bit and even democracy now and dd and i listen to it.

I would probably do a combination of BBC and NPR.   I am not aware of any specific child targeted news sites though.

BBC and NPR, either audio newstreams or pre-selected segments that your stream. Or read from their websites. PBS News Hour is also excellent is you want a tv format.

A friend just recently sent me a link to "Here There Everywhere News for Kids"

http://htekidsnews.com/

Not sure if it fits your definition but worth checking out!  They bill themselves as "a news website for kids and their grown-ups."  It's aimed toward elementary age kids.

Hope that helps,

Companies that publish kids magazines, such as Scholastic News, Weekly Reader and Time for Kids also have on-line versions of their magazines which have topical articles, although you won't find all of the headlines covered in a child-friendly way - just selected topics.  I also like The Learning Network from The New York Times which provides ideas for helping make sure your child is really understanding what they are reading through daily quizzes based on the New York Times articles (which can be read on-line).  You can find more details and links to the above resources at http://www.childrens-books-and-reading.com/kids-newspapers.html
