Advice for getting 16 mo. old through 10 minutes of "discomfort"

16 mo. old has a badly chipped front tooth.  Because of where and how deep it is and the fact that it's causing him discomfort and that it won't fall out for about 4 more years, we and dentist agree that we want to fill it.

[I didn't post this in dental because we don't have a decay problem, I don't think going on a big program of nutrition/homeopathics is necessary, etc., he just chipped one tooth badly by falling]

Any advice for getting him through the discomfort?  If it was some other medical procedure, I might try to nurse him through it, but obviously that isn't an option.

We'll just muddle through the best we can, but thought maybe someone might know some magic tricks that I could try.

we had our DS1's chipped tooth (and other cavities) filled under GA when he was about 18 months old. That said, the filling on the chip popped out after a few months, and the dentist said that they will do that really easily. So we did not have it refilled. I would reconsider if I were you, and maybe talk about other options (a sealant, etc over the chipped part).
