The Perfect Off Grid Location

DH and I are discussing moving off grid in about 18 months.  Due to the nature of self-employment, we can technically live anywhere in the world but would prefer to stay in the US for practical reasons.

I want to be warm (hate being cold), DH hates being hot so a moderate temperature would be great.  If it could be 70-80 year round I'd be happy :)  We don't feel any strong desire to live someplace with four seasons or anything.  I'd rather have an easy year round growing season LOL

We're trying to put together a list of locations to consider.  Does anyone have any favorites?

I haven't done it but I know 2 different people who did this in Key West. It's a gorgeous place!

Hawaii??  We lived there for a while and loved it (moved back b/c of family), it's got the climate you are looking for...

Thank you!  I think I'd be worried about hurricanes in Key West but it sounds lovely there.  We are looking at Hawaii (that's my top choice--still trying to convince DH).  Did you like any particular areas PeaceLovinMama?

The Big Island is amazing!  The only touristy spot is Kona but it is small and drive just a little ways and it is very rural feeling and local.  I also love that you have so many different climates to choose from, desert on the Kona side, lush tropical on the north and east sides, Waimea (NW part of the island) is a ranching area and beautiful (doesn't feel like Hawaii), then there is Volcano and it is a whole other place on it's own, it's enchanting.  I just cannot say enough about the Big Island.  There are amazing beaches all over the island, white, black and even green sand beaches.  Great snorkeling/scuba spots.  Fresh, delicious food year round from fishing to pig, and avocados, mac nuts, citrus...everything you could want to grow.  The people are very friendly too, everyone waves, something I love about small town areas. Definitely worth it to go check out.  We want to get a small piece of land there in the future to go in the winter months.  It's been 4 years since we've been and I miss it, if it wasn't for family here in the PNW we would still be there : )

If you haven't heard about the WWOOF program you should check it out.  If you wanted you could stay on a organic farm and work a few hours a day in exchange for food and a place to stay, a lot of these farms are family friendly too.  That would be a economical way to visit the island and really get a feel for the area, community, etc. rather than staying in a hotel.  I know there are at least 15 farms in the WWOOF directory.  You just pay $20 a year to be a member and they will send you the directory.

Hope that helps, so excited for you!

Thanks PeaceLovinMama!  Awesome info--I really appreciate you taking the time!

I'm really hoping for Hawaii although DH is concerned that in the event of an economic crisis, attack, natural disaster, etc. we'd be very isolated and possible in a bad situation since where are all the people on Oahu going to go, etc.?  I don't know, some days that concerns me and some days I think the odds are too small to give up a chance to live in paradise ;)

California has the mild climate you describe, but the cost of living is outrageous and it's dry there. Southern mountains can be good for moderate temps...TN, WV maybe
