Looks like pigweed (amaranth relative) to me.  ???

Sorry.  Mis-ID.  Is it a smartweed?  Look at the stem where the leave attaches.  Does it have a knobby bit?  (Pardon my exacting botanical jargon....)   That would indicate a polygonum relative.  Are the plants completely separate? or are they connected by an underground root?

They are not peppers, nor any other tomato relative.  (And it's not pigweed, what was I thinking?)

Some kinds of perennial smartweeds can be hard to eliminate, so I would make sure that you have a positive ID on this one.

I agree.  Not peppers.  Looks like pigweed or pokeweed?

Pigweed looks more like an oversized lamb's quarters.

It looks like smartweed to me, because of the dark areas in the middle of the leaves.
