My 3 year old needed a tooth out and before they would extract it he needed to be on antibiotic. The tooth was infected; the nerve was actually dead. He fell and chipped it last summer otherwise has no dental issues! Inside of the tooth was soft and rotting. He never felt a thing when they poked inside with a sharp instrument! We could have gone the crown route but I chose the extraction.. anyway, I hated to use antibiotics as he had a bad reaction in the past a few years ago but if the tooth infection is too great then the shot will not numb it for the procedure. And of course they worried about infection spreading upwards through the gum etc before we could schedule to have it out.

Found out he is allergic to the amoxicillin, broke out in little red bumps mainly on the forearms but also some on face and hands etc. HE only had 2 doses spaced 8 hours apart. I stopped at this point cause I suspected this; he was on it once several years ago and had the full body rash about a week into it, but they one dr told me it was not related to the amox the other said it was amoxicillin rash but doesnt necessary mean a true allergy.

Ok anyway, about 10 days later he started on erythromycin (giving the skin bumps plenty of time to heal up) and was on it for 4 days at which point I stopped cause I thought he also was also allergic to that too (but now Im thinking he broke out from the sun that day and he was probably ok to continue with it)

Ever since that day when he took the 2 doses of amoxicillin (almost a month ago!) whenever he goes out in the sun even for 10 minutes he breaks out in the very same spots as he did when on the antibiotic and other skin areas also exposed to the sun. He basically now has sun allergy or photosensitivity. I think this is a side effect from the antibiotic! I just connected the dots today and figured this out! I couldn't understand why it kept coming back just when it seemed to go away and we stopped ALL antibiotic 18 days ago!

Has this happened to anyone else (either you or your child) and if so, HOW LONG does this last?  I am sad when I think we might be stuck with this the whole summer (Im well aware of the vitamin D thing, he tested insufficient a year or two ago and we've always been able to enjoy outside time with no problems in the past!) In the meantime I am trying to decide whether to wear longsleeve on him outside or use sunscreen (I have the good kind with safe ingredients, spf30) during the times he will be outside (like in preschool)

Does anyone have any suggestions to natural things that will help get this antibiotic out of his skin if its still there (its been a month, so I don't know- could it still be there in his system?) I did get some probiotic powder which I had given for the duration of the antibiotic and shortly afterwards (and thank goodness no diarrhea or any digestive problems there I thought I solved that one!) I had stopped that a while ago but I think I'll start it again in case it makes a difference..

Is there anything can put onto the skin to help heal it and protect it (aloe vera? any suggestions of brands?) I dont have anything except the sunscreen so looking for suggestions here. Also any additional vitamins we can take internally that will help photosensitivity with the sun or help heal chemical or photosenstivity from antibiotics.. We have calamine lotion we use on it which does seem to help dry it out and help the itch if it gets bad (now that we discovered the sun link I think this should be less of a problem)

Never had this problem in my life (Im not allergic to anything that I know of and have taken penicillin a ton of times myself!) so I am clueless how to treat it, and looking for help here. Maybe someone has been there, done that!
