Stripping thirsties covers?

Hiya. I have a diaper service so I know nothing about stripping but think I need to strip our covers cuz they still smell like pee even after washing. What's the easiest way to do that? I'd rather not buy anything special (have heard of using dawn). Would bac-out do any good?
TIA!

What detergent are you washing them with now?  How much detergent for how many covers (and anything else in the load with them)?

We only have about 5 in the current size being used so I throw them in with the regular wash and use Method scent free detergent. We are also in an apt using shared coin-op machines so if I were to soak anything, it'd have to be in the sink, in case that matters.
Thanks!!!

Method has some ingredients in it that are not safe for diaper covers.  IMO, all Method products are not really very natural - they usually have optical brighteners and other artificial chemicals, but it's your business what you use on your clothes.  :-)  Also, liquid detergents are not as good, esp. for diapers, as they tend to cause buildup.

First, you need to rehab the covers by getting out all the gunk - hand wash them in hot water with some plain blue Dawn dish soap and rinse a lot.  That should remove the bad detergent.  For regular washing, if you don't want to change your detergent for your clothes, then you should probably continue to hand wash with either Dawn or a powdered detergent with no additives: Country Save/bumGenius, Rockin Green, BioKleen, Planet, are all good choices.

You can put them in with your clothes if you quit using the Method.  We use BioKleen on our clothes (any of their powders) and love it, and these would work on your diaper covers, too.

Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks so much for the info. Method was the best compromise for getting DH's nasty work clothes clean as well as gentle enough for baby stuff but maybe it's time I look into separate soaps for each... Anyways, I'll give the dawn soap method a try in my little mini washer for now.

Seriously - try BioKleen.  The premium plus powder cleans clothes better than anything I have ever used, and is fine for all my kids' sensitive skin (we use it on all their clothes.)  Plus it is so cheap.

Will do. I love bac-out so I'm sure the laundry soap is great. Is there somewhere cheaper to buy it than amazon? With free shipping, it still looks to be 10 cents more per load than method. Or is that just the price to pay for quality soap? Just thought I'd check since you said it's cheap. Thanks again.

I haven't heard good things about the Method detergent in general. Maybe hand washing the covers in the sink and drying them in the sun would work better to get them really clean. You shouldn't have to strip covers, if they smell like pee when they come out of the wash they just aren't getting clean. :)
