Can implantation happen this fast?

Hi

My husband and I had intercourse around or close to the last day of my period. 7 days later, after exercising I had some spotting. I never had this before. I have two toddlers already and experienced implantation bleeding with both. They were both mucousy texture though and happened around the time my period was due. In this instance, it happened 2 weeks before my period is due and not a mucous texture. Looks like blood (like the beginning of a period). So I'm not sure if implantation can occur this soon. Thanks in advance!

Well maybe I am. Just right now I had the brown mucous spotting that looks so similar to my previous pregnancies. If I am, I'm happy and so scared at the same time. This really wasn't planned. I mean I wanted to, but not this early. I was thinking later in the year. My dad just had a stroke so right now I'm on a roller coaster of emotions right now.

Implantation bleeding would occur 6-12 days after ovulation.  From what you are describing it sounds like you're only on cycle day 12-14 or so?  That would mean you would have had to O around CD 6-8 and have the earliest implantation possible. This is not likely so my thought is that you are experiencing ovulation spotting (indicating that you were/are extremely fertile) or breakthrough bleeding (which happens sometimes when your hormones are fluctuating more than usual and ovulation is delayed).  The former seems more likely to me.

Do you chart your cervical fluid?  If not, it is helpful to know that women generally have creamy or eggwhite consistency fluid when they are fertile, just prior to ovulation.  So, it sounds to me like you're fertile now, especially if you're on CD 12-14ish.  If you don't want to get pregnant right now, definitely take precautions when DTD over the next few days!

Thank you so much for your reply. It's very informative. Well.. I do not chart my cervical fluid. All I know is that my period started May 21,2011 and then I noticed spotting (scant blood) on the 28th and on the 29th brownish discharge. It is now May 31st. So perhaps you are right... I think it's way too soon as well. But just in case, how soon can I take a pregnancy test to know for sure (the sensitive ones all say 4 days before my period). My period isn't due till two weeks from now. I have a 21 cycle... I get period every 3 weeks.

Okay, without charting/temping we'll have to speculate and make the assumption that you are indeed ovulating and have a fertile length LP, both things that might be questionable with such a short cycle.  Please keep in mind that these are just guesses...

So, let's assume the shortest fertile luteal phase- 10 days.  We'll also assume that this cycle is 21 days like your others have been.  21-10=11.  So CD 11 would be your latest ovulation day, which honestly is the earliest O day I've personally heard of, though it's still definitely possible.  If you got AF on May 21st then you are on CD 12.   That puts the spotting on CD 8 and 9...which could indicate you O'd earlier than CD 11, but let's still assume CD 11 for counting purposes.  So today we'll say you're 1 DPO.  Some women test positive as  early as 8 or 9 DPO (June 8th or 9th), but it's always less ambiguous if you wait longer- until your expected AF, especially with a short LP.  Personally I would wait it out until you pass AF...more like June 11th or 12th, but I know it can be very hard to wait.

Be sure to get a sensitive test (one that only requires an hCG level of 25) like First Response or many dollar store or generic drug store tests.

Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I see you are very knowledgeable about these things. I will wait to test next week and will let you know the results. I am starting to experience cramping on my left side (they feel like "right after you eat and exercise kind of cramps).
