Not getting a good install with cosco scenera

We have a TrueFitP in our car (which we love) and a scenera in our in-law's car that we use for their occasional trips and for airplane travel.  They have the old lap/shoulder belts that don't click/retract.  When I first bought it it took me a lot of bloody fingers, but I got it in tight with the locking clip and a rolled up towel.  For the life of me now, I can't get it back in tight again (they took it out and I needed to re-install).  Even after beating up my fingers again.  I do the trick of getting it in tight, then unclipping, then locking, and it's still loose.  (like moves 3-5" at belt path.)

Any suggestions?  Also, my son is really tall and getting close to the RFing height limit (he's 31lbs) on the scenera (no where near the height limit for the TFP) so that is worrying me.  He's only 2 so I don't want to turn him yet, but I'm worried I'd have to for occasional use (airplane, vacation taxis, riding in in-laws car once in a blue moon).

Anyone have tight install tips?  The seats seem to be weirdly shaped in their old vovlo, I don't have this problem when I use the seat in other cars/airplane.

They way I've done it is to install, buckle, tighten.  Then while doing crazy acrobatics, hold the seatbelt absolutely still with my hand so that it stays in the same position, then tighten every so slightly, put on the locking clip, rebuckle.

That's what I've done each time, but my fingers get mangled by the locking clip.  Hmmm...

Does the car have just a lap belt in the middle?  If so, you can install there and you won't need a locking clip.

It does, which is of course the easiest solution, and the one by ILs don't want.
