I'm looking for suggestions for either a specific product or a type of product that produces a temporary low level of light that will allow for nighttime diaper changes/nursing adjustments with the baby without disturbing the toddler and still sleeping parent. What I'm looking for is something that maybe clips/sticks in place (say, on a headboard, not that we have one :-P), is easy to turn on in the dark, and produces a dim but still useful light--brighter than a nightlight. I can't think of anything, but there's a bottomless well of products out there that I don't know about, so I thought I'd try. Alternately, I'd be interested to hear how other people have resolved this need. Right now, we have the master bathroom light on all night, which is a major energy suck and really too much light.

I read a tip before DS was born that a red lightbulb makes a great nightlight because it is easy on the eyes. Â We still have a red lightbulb in a lamp in DD's room (she's 25 months) and leave it on all night. Â It's low wattage but light enough to see with. Â When she slept in our room for most of the first year, we had the red light in our room too.

I had the computer in the bedroom and left it on all night, and I would jiggle the mouse to wake up the monitor when I wanted light. I had it set to go black again after 30 minutes. But I can't remember if I found that to be enough light for diaper changes or not. I think not. (But the period when you need to change diapers during the night is so short - it probably won't be long before you don't need to worry about that anymore.)
we have dimming sconces on either side of the bed, it remembers the last level of light when you turn it off so i just hit the switch and it goes back to the light it was at until i turn it off again.
Â
for diapers, i used to just turn the main light on. when i switched to cloth diapers, i would double stuff them, I usually change her right before we go to bed, and again in the morning when there is plenty of daylight. so i no longer need to change at night, its only the nursing adjustments when i need light.
Â
I like the computer mouse screen idea, we got an extension cord for our mouse so we can pause and play movies from bed. the light from the computer is pretty harsh though.
