DD is almost 23 months and we plan on having a family bed for the long haul. I love it. DD loves it. DH loves it.

For those of you who co-sleep for the long term, I'm wondering a couple things. One, do you have bedrooms set up for your kids and if so, when did you set them up and what's in them? DD doesn't have a bedroom of her own and I'm leaning towards not setting one up for her until she asks for one, but I'm curious to see other's thoughts/experiences with this. We currently have a 3 bdr house. The 2nd bdr is rented out to a close friend and the 3rd bdr is in the process of getting re-drywalled and painted. Once that's done I think we're going to set it up as an office with a day bed until she's ready for her own room. What have others done?

Two, our co-sleeping arrangements are currently her in a crib sidecarred to our queen bed. She spends most of the night in the crib but will often roll over and cuddle at various points in the night. She gets in and out of the crib by herself. How long term can a side-carred crib be? Should I at some point be thinking about making the crib into a toddler bed and side-carring that? Is that even possible?

Thanks in advance!

But I would think a side-carred crib would work until she decides she doesn't like it. Do you have room for another mattress? You could just put another regular bed in there, up against yours, if you have room. We have our mattress & boxspring on the floor & if we manage to get pregnant (been TTC for 2yrs) , my plan is to remove the boxsprings again and just have the mattress on the floor & we might have just enough room to squeeze a crib mattress beside it so we have a bit of extra space for the second baby.
The other room is DS's playroom. He doesn't play in it much -- it's upstairs with the construction -- but it's there if we need to get away from the rest of the house!! We have a crib mattress on the floor up there. He sometimes pretends to sleep on it, and it's a comfy spot for reading. I'm sure at some point he'll want his own bed & then we'll just put a twin or trundle bed up there. It is a nice escape since our house is small and we spend all of our time in 2 rooms downstairs. Oh we also have all his clothes up there. So there are 2 night-stand size things with drawers of clothes, a closet of clothes, the crib mattress (and some pillows and blankets) and a bunch of random toys. I'm eager to get the construction done so we can safely send DS upstairs alone to play (not sure he'd do that at this point, he's very clingy, but maybe in a year or two?)
