Had a great multi-generational discussion

We were at my (DH's) cousin's baby shower yesterday. We, me, my MIL, grandmother IL, and this cousin, were all sitting around the table discussing birth and insurance and breastfeedinging, etc. Well, cousin mentions her old ped that circed her 1st son(they don't know what this 2nd baby is.) I jumped in w/ "I wouldn't circ a son if I had one." (It seems cold when I type it, but it opened up the discussion and didn't come off as bad when I said it.) Anyway, that opened the door to a really nice, open conversation between us 3 generations. G-ma IL told us why and how things were done when she had her 4 sons. MIL told me why she had my DH and BIL done. No one got defensive or anything.
Two+ years of research on the topic came flowing out of me. I don't think I shut my mouth during that whole conversation.:LOL I would be floored if cousin decides to cut this baby if it's a boy. She had NO idea what was really involved. She said she didn't really want to cut baby #1, but DH felt more strongly about it. I think I've armed her much better for the discussion now.

I'll spare you the details, but I basically condensed all the factual info you would find in this forum. I think it went well, b/c it was obvious I knew what I was talking about. They know I research all this stuff a lot.(natural birth, nursing, circ, nutrition, etc)

I swear I'm not trying to toot my own horn. I can't type this w/out making it come across that way. I'm just so excited about our great conversation that I had to share it with you guys. This gives me hope for future conversations on the topic.

Good for you! It can be a hard topic to discuss. Now, hopefully the other women present will pass on the information you gave them to someone else and those someone elses will pass it on to even more and so on and so forth. Spreading the word is so important. All baby boys are glad you did!

Monica, that is SOOO great!

My own experience is that when the "older" generation are brought into conversation, they remember the time before the US had embraced ric, and remember healthy whole penises, and really don't accept the cutting of newborns as much as the younger ones who are *only familiar with cut genitalia.

You must have chosen your words carefully, and spoken from your heart, to have accomplished facilitating a successful multi-generational conversation like this with no hard feelings all around!

Truly, you are to be commended! How wonderful to have your family actually thinking about this subject!

Way to go, girl!!!
