Second Floor Window...

We do not have air conditioning and it is starting to get warm enough that we like having the windows open.  We live in a town-house style rental.  We cannot put anything in that is "permanent".  No drilling holes.  No sticking nails in windows.  However, I'd like to be able to open the younger kids' room windows in the evening and at night, and not have to worry about them deciding to push out the screen and/or go "on an adventure".  The porch roof is right outside the window, but it is a pretty steep pitch.  I can see them doing that, then losing their footing and falling.  It is on the opposite side of the house from my bedroom.  Anyone think of anything?  I wish I had the windows that open from the top.  They are the double-hung type.  Metal/plastic frame.  Maybe something so I can open the window about 3-4 inches, but they can't open it further.

A pressure mount baby gate might work.  If it goes inside the frame, if the kids push on it it'll just push it into the sides of the window frame and such and won't let them fall out.

There are gates made specifically for windows. Check out http://www.window-bars.com/window-guards.html to get some ideas. I think you can get ones at Target or WalMart. I live in a one story house and all my windows bases are about three and a half feet up high so I don't really worry about it

Where do you live?  Many states in the US require rental properties to have have window guards to protect children from falls.  I would contact your town offices.

I haven't tried this, so can't attest to how it works, but thought it might be worth mentioning as an option. I am also looking at a solution to this issue. This appeals to me because I don't want something permanently attached or bars like a prison.
