Got an anti-midwife comment from a nurse today!

Really irritated me. I was on the phone with my nurse at my allergist's office. I was calling to find out about benadryl and pregnancy since my eyes are swollen almost shut from allergies (which by the way, I I still don't know if it's ok to take! So if you have info, let me know!). Anyway, she said they think it's ok, but to ask my OB. I said, "Ok, I'll call my midwife" and she said "No, OB's are qualified to answer questions about medications but midwives are not". ROTFLMAO.gifWth?

I was thinking "Wow, is this actually a nurse?!"

This also begs the questions...are there OTHER medical professionals that do not think midwives are qualified to give advice about drugs? I about lost it on that woman!

Well I can only speak from my experience of those around me --- but yes --- in general most medical professionals do not see midwives as legitimate medical advisers.

My husband is a paramedic - and he has struggled with our upcoming homebirth.  He also keeps telling his co-workers that I'm seeing a MW and having a homebirth - which I keep telling him not to do but whatever.

He's getting all sorts of comments and ugh!  Its hard.

Last pregnancy I went to a dentist, one that came highly recommended and was a natural/hippy kind of place, and also sort of a spa like atmosphere.. aromatherapy, wax treatments on hands..lol. So, I'm about 14 weeks. They do *x-rays*.. you know, the part of dental care that is most concerning during pregnancy? Thoroughly covered with the lead cape including a wrap around thing for my neck to protect the thyroid. So, I go through all this, sit and wait for the dentist, sit through the exam, only for him to say that he will not replace the filling that had fallen out and was causing me extreme pain without a note from my OB. The man WOULD NOT see reason. I tried to explain that my midwife is an independent care provider, fully licensed by the state, and does not have an OB who she "works under" or in any way affiliated with her practice. Completely unreasonable to go find some random OB to make an appt with, have a prenatal exam, just to get "permission" to have a filling. Eff that! I took my records and my x-rays to a different dentist (one I'd seen before and liked very much, but is just FAR) and they were pretty much aghast that the previous dentist was refusing to treat me. They were like, whoa, no way, we definitely want something like this taken care of asap!

What really baffles me is they're all for doing x-rays, but not the filling. x-rays are the most dangerous part! duh. It was a mercury free office too, so they can't even use that excuse. But man, I was so irate that they disrespected my midwife like that.

No answer to the medical professionals being stupid.... but yes Benadryl is safe to take and is the preferred med for allergies (and a few other things)

Are you certain she is a nurse? I've received care and also have worked at medical practices where medical assistants and even medical secretaries are generically referred to as nurses.

Well, I suppose that is something to consider. I did ask for the "advice nurse". Do medical assistants sometimes give medical advice when you ask for a nurse? I just assumed they're all nurses. But then, I don't really understand the role, duties of a medical assistant

No, if you asked specifically for a nurse, they should be handing you over to a nurse. I thought maybe you just were talking to whomever picked up the phone, which may or may not be a nurse.
