Crib question--gap at edge of mattress

We got an Ikea crib for our impending little one, and it has the mattress framed by a couple of slats, and then the crib rails go outside these slats. I don't know if that makes any sense. The upshot of it is that there is about a 1/2" gap between the edge of the mattress and the rails, where the slat does not come to the top of the mattress. I'm a first-timer and I've never dealt with cribs before in any capacity. Is this normal? Should we get something to stuff in it? We do not have a crib bumper because as I've understood it's a safety hazard. I'm not too worried right off because I know when baby is small she won't be very mobile, but in time it's going to be an issue and I'm worried about the potential for getting little body parts pinched in there. Any thoughts?

Bump.

Anyone? Am I really the only person who's dealt with this?

Just bought my crib from IKEA yesterday and I haven't set it up yet but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to be dealing with a similar problem. I didn't buy the mattress from IKEA and chose instead to buy a crib mattress from BRU. I think it's slightly more narrow than the mattresses at IKEA but I'm not sure. Do you know which crib model you got? I purchased the Gulliver in white. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20203332
