Postpartum clothes help

This is my first baby, due between mid-June and mid-July.  What should I get ahead of time for dressing this summer?

I want to look not shlubby all summer, and I also want to be comfortable.   I also hope to not buy a lot.   But a good fitting bra (or 3-4) is a total necessity for non-shlubbiness and comfort.

I'm athletic (yoga teacher by trade), so I love the idea of nursing camisoles. That way I can practice yoga in them too.  My bust was 36C before pregnancy, and has only grown a bit (probably a cup size, but I still use some pre-pregnancy bras).   What size (approx) nursing bras should I buy?  Should I buy now, or wait to see what size my breasts will be?   When will I know my size? - I know my boobs will be huge in the first weeks, and then calm down a bit.   Anyone have a specific bra they'd recommend, or specific camisoles?

Otherwise, I'm planning to wear my maternity clothes for awhile, and hopefully fit into my roomier sundresses and flowing tops later in the summer.   I have to look at my wardrobe with this whole new set of eyes though - as in, "How quickly will this shirt/dress allow me to whip my boob out?"

thanks for the help!!

Well, you're one step ahead of me - thinking about breast access! I brought a dress that had to be hauled up from the bottom to wear home from the hospital!

I wore a lot of yoga pants/shorts & tank tops to start. I did not find I lost my baby weight very quickly so I stayed in my end of pregnancy size for awhile.

I had a July baby last time and I had a lot of success with nursing camisoles and a shrug or sweater like this for the top.  I just went to Goodwill about 4 weeks after baby came and bought a pair of shorts & capris that were comfortable until I shrunk more.  Good Luck to you.

^^^ Agreed. I just bought something like this, only in long sleeve, and light grey. Mine also isn't cinched in under the bust. I can wear it during the pregnancy with stretchy tanks in the AC this summer, and then after the baby is born, it'll work nice as an extra layer, and the flowiness should help take attention away from my middle, which I know won't go back to flat right away:

I also think comfy yoga pants will be best, because it's what you feel comfortable in. Maybe some of the ones that are a bit more snug up top, but then flowey through the thighs and legs?

I'll be postpartum in winter, but I'm planning on lots of long tanks with zip ups etc overtop.

Last time (and this time, unless we suddenly come into money so I can buy a bunch of new PP stuff!), I wore a lot of nursing tanks under button-down shirts, which I left unbuttoned, half-buttoned or completely buttoned as I felt like it. It was closer to winter, so I wore a lot of zip-up hoodie-type tops as well. Dresses were pretty much out - you can get nursing-friendly ones, but they're few and far between!

This is what I've done in the past..

Wait until after engorgement passes to buy bras, you just never know what's going to fit later.  Also, your ribs are going to shrink, so buying bras now is a bad idea.  The first couple of weeks I prefer to wear sports bras or nursing tanks.  They're forgiving, cheap and you're not trying to win any fashion contests in the first weeks pp.

I always like to have 1-2 pairs of jeans/pants that fit me properly.  My maternity jeans tend to start falling off within a week, so I can't wear them long (I gain a lot of weight while pregnant, but lose it quickly).  I think it's nice to have a few things that fit right at every stage pp.  This doesn't mean that you have to spend a lot of money.  Ask for hand-me-downs from friends in larger sizes or check Goodwill, etc.

I love my stretchy waist skirts.  They're very forgiving and I still feel good in them.

Oh, and I have a lot of nursing friendly dresses.  They're out there, just keep your eyes open.  Some of my maternity dresses can also be worn pp.

I wouldn't buy any sized bra at all until at least 3-4 weeks after giving birth (better yet, 5-6).  Last time I bought a whole bunch of nursing bras a couple of weeks before my due date and they all ended up being way too big.  I would stick with nursing tanks (or better yet plain cheap non-nursing tanks with shelf bras, you can pull them down to nurse) for the early postpartum days.

Honestly I even find nursing tanks too restrictive but I am one of those hate-my-bra people.  (I only wear them to work.)  I am a 34C when not pregnant or nursing.  If you want a nursing tank/bra here is my evaluation of the ones I own:

- Bravado tank: very flattering but sort of low-cut so that I don't feel comfortable wearing it alone, clasps are discreet but take a little getting used to

- GlamourMom tank: less flattering (gives you the squished-boob sports bra look) but more modest to be worn alone if wanted, clasps are really obvious but very easy to use

- Original Nursing Bra by Bravado is quite comfortable (and it fits a size range so if you are dead set on a real bra it is probably OK to buy one of these earlier postpartum).

- Body Silk Seamless by Bravado is also very comfortable, slightly more sized so I wouldn't buy it so early but probably more flattering in the long run, comes with optional molded cups if you like that (I don't so I threw them away).

- Sleep bra by Motherhood Maternity, I love this one (it's the closest to a non-bra) and wore it pretty much exclusively in the early postpartum period.  Also fits a size range so you could buy it early on.

- Sleep bra by Medela, I dislike this one actually, it's the same idea as the Motherhood one but has less coverage and thinner fabric so the straps and band get too thin and kind of bitey

Last time I initially bought a whole bunch of nursing tops and ended up hating them all (ugly, ill-fitting, too low-cut, etc).  I found it much easier and more flattering to just layer a nursing tank under my regular pre-preggo shirts, which all fit fine after the first couple of weeks.  That way you only have to worry specifically about nursing access if you are wearing a dress.

By the way, although it took me a year to really lose the baby weight (of 30 lbs gained, 14 came off at birth and the remaining 16 went s-l-o-w-l-y) and a year and a half for my stomach to go back to its previous dimensions, I was able to get into a lot of my prepartum pants by six weeks, just because of the way they were cut (mostly the ones that were lower in the rise or stretchier in the waist).

Thanks everyone!   I think I'll wait on the bras for a few weeks, and use nursing camisoles/regular tank tops with shelf bras.   I'm guessing I'll fit into my regular tops pretty fast.   I detest maternity clothes in general, so it's nice to hear that I potentially don't have to buy a lot of postpartum-specific clothes, except for some bras once my size evens out.   Getting ready for this bambino to come out!
