Potty training setback...hates taking off pants

I started trying the slow and gentle/quasi-EC potty training approach with my daughter about 6 months ago. Things were going great until her 3rd poo on the potty. For some reason the sensation scared her and suddenly she refused to sit on the potty with her pants down. I decided to back off a lot and hope that she got over it.

Cut to now. DD is 23 months old and I am so. done. with diapers. Just, ugh. Considering her two closest friends are very recently trained, I decided it was time to start up again. She's been sitting on the potty several times a day with her diaper on for months, but today I took the diaper off. She's been doing ok. We've only had one catch, but she's actually allowed me to take her pants and diaper off for most of the day.

However, this evening she's back to being terrified about removing the diaper, and I don't know what to do. Almost 6 months of no pressure hasn't made it better, so I feel I have to push past this or work with it, but how? And as a feminist and rape survivor, I'm really squicked by the idea of pulling my protesting daughter's pants down.

Anyone dealt with this before? Help? Other than this issue, I can't see any reason why she's not ready to potty train.

Maybe try EC split pants? http://www.ecwear.com/Split-Pants/   I haven't used them, and I'm not sure exactly how they work, but it would let your DD keep her pants on while pottying.  She might feel more in control of her body and the whole potty experience that way.
