Making it work in a small space

Not sure if this is the right forum for this thread... But I'll go ahead anyway!

DH, DS, and I are living in a small, one bedroom apartment. DH is really wanting to get a second room, to have some more privacy and time away from DS, and to have his own space again. We've moved so much in the last few years, I just really want to settle down.

The problem is, we love our area. It's close to the downtown in our city, where I work. It's close to a grocery store, and a park. It's close to our daycare provider! All of our friends are here. And we don't have a car. We've been searching around, and any 2 bedroom apartments/suites are way above our budget. (What we're paying now is technically above our budget too... Yikes.)

Does anyone have any tips for making it work in a one bedroom apartment? How do you organize things? I feel like all of the "baby-proof" zones (tops of closets, etc) are overflowing with things that we're trying to keep away from DS...

We have a 460'sq cabin with one bedroom and 2 kids - it is chaotic and I would love more space. We're planning on building a loft bed to get DS1 off our family bed. Not sure if that helps.... I know what you mean though about the child-proof areas up high overflowing.
