Quilting - when you didn't buy enough fabric?

I am very novice quilter. Now that my child is school aged I am getting back into it. First priority is finish a bunch I started… years ago. Most everything was left in the top piece stage, but my MIL is taking a long arm quilting class and is happy to help me quilt them when ready.

The issue I am facing now is I didn’t seem to buy any coordinating fabric for binding and backing, and in some cases borders for my quilts L So I will need to find fabric that “goes with” but is not the same fabric.

This kinda bugs me. I would like to give some these gifts, but feel maybe they do not look as nice as they could. Any advice or just a BTDT?

Thanks!

I think i got into quilting for the very reason that it allowed me to DECREASE MY STASH!  - quilting is a great way to use up bits and odds and ends of fabrics - the finished product looks BETTER for it!

I typically use just muslin  for the backing and binding.  you could also use a nice broadcloth in a corresponding color - as for borders - just add something that looks good with the existing quilt.

I once made a quilt for a california king sized bed.....i just didnt even have paper big enough to draw out what i wanted...lol   once i was done (or so i thought)  i realized i was 13 " short all around...so i added a second border - i think i did triangles of some sort....

and if all that doesnt reassure you - i once found fabric at my local fabric store that i had first bought 25 years ago - bring the quilt to the store - you may be able to find the exact same fabric.

Happy Quilting!
